Wiggin Street Parent Update

October 18, 2021

Better Together

Families,

Last week was a full week even with having students in session for only 4 days! First Grade went to Lehner's Pumpkin Farm, Second and Fifth Grade had YES Concerts to attend, and the building was a buzz of actively engaged learning! We also had time on Friday to reflect on school initiatives, attend Professional Development, and plan for the second nine weeks.

As for October, make sure you have marked your calendars for some fun events including Pumpkins on Parade and the Harvest Parade and Parties. Also, 3rd Grade will be completing their Fall State testing during the last week of October, so please make sure your child's appointments are scheduled to not interfere with their attendance.

Sadly, we will not be having a Veterans Day assembly this year, but are happily making other plans to educate our students about the holiday as well as honoring Veterans for their service. We will be having a flag ceremony with our students on the morning of November 9th as a culminating event. This ceremony will be recorded and shared with families in the form of a video. We would love to include videos of students recognizing a Veteran that is or has been in their life. It's as easy as going to this site and recording your student thanking a veteran for their service. The following are examples of questions that may be answered in the video:

1. How is the student associated to the Veteran?

2. What years did the Veteran serve?

3. Which branch of our U.S. Military is this Veteran a member of?

We appreciate all you do to support our school and kiddos! Have a great week!

Warmly,

Christy Grandstaff

Thanks to SPI for offering a free admission pass to ONE student in each participating THIRD GRADE classroom in Knox County! All students that participated were put in a drawing for the pass. Our students participated in the afternoon outside on Thursday.

Thrive Kids Update

We are excited that Wiggin Street and Thrive Kids will be presenting tonight in video format at the MVCSD Board Meeting! We will share the presentation also in the next Wiggin Street Parent Update for all to view.

Thrive Kids with Coach Hannah

Lunges and more lunges! This week we worked on completing an alternating lunge using the proper form - strong core, squash bug, *kiss* floor with knee, rocket up! We also worked on creating a plan before we did our challenging workout to make a plan on what we would do when things got hard through the workout. Then we put our plans to the test by completing a variety of movements in :30 second increments. The students did an excellent job and worked hard throughout the entire class!

Pumpkins on Parade

We are currently collecting craft items for our Pumpkins on Parade Craft Night. If you have items to donate, please send them in a bag to school before Oct. 26th. Beginning at 6 pm, your family is invited to bring a blanket or chairs to sit on the front lawn to decorate a pumpkin. Each child or family needs to bring their own pumpkin and Friends of Wiggin Street will provide decorations and snacks. Parents are expected to stay with their children and help them to create a boo-tiful pumpkin creation. The event will last from 6-7 pm.

Fall Harvest Parade and Parties

We are excited for our Parade and Parties on October 29th! Children are invited to participate in our annual costume parade. The parade will begin at 2:15 with parties following. The exception is 3rd grade who has a party before the parade due to specials from 2:45-3:30.

Costumes should come to school in a bag and children should be able to get in and out of their costumes easily. (If you feel your child needs help with his/her costume, please contact the classroom teacher.) Please make sure that there are no scary costumes because of our younger students. There should be no Halloween masks, but protective masks due to the Pandemic are optional, since students will be outside. No pretend weapons of any kind are permitted at school even as a part of the costume. Please save those for trick-or-treat night.

We ask parents not to pass out treats along the route. Any treats brought to school for the class parties must be individually wrapped.

3rd Grade Fall ELA Ohio State Testing

On October 26 and 27, 3rd grade students will take the Fall administration of the state English Language Arts Assessment. In case of absence, the make up day will be Oct. 28. The test will take place between 9:30-11:30 on these days. We would ask that you please not schedule any special appointments for these dates.

Fifth Grade Robot Arms

In this STEM activity, partners had to write a program for the Robot Arm to sort the pasta.
