November 27- December 1
A Note from the Principal
Dear Langston Hughes Family,
I hope you had a great holiday filled with family and love. The Wednesday before Thanksgiving was House Challenge Day and we had an absolute BALL! The children and staff were dressed in their House t-shirts and ready to compete. The students began with a mini-pep rally in the classrooms. Then, they completed academic challenges in the classroom and ran an obstacle course in the gym. We ended the day with some staff competitions and an award ceremony to announce the winning House, The House of Leadership!. It was an awesome way to spend the day before Thanksgiving. We are already planning the next one.
If you were unable to snag a House t-shirt for the first House Challenge Day, feel free to take advantage of our current ordering period. The order form is below, and the money is due on Friday, December 1.
Have a wonderful week!
Each week the students participate in a different house challenge. Parents can help their child's house win by participating in the Parent Challenges. Participation in workshops and meetings are a way to help your child's house earn points. There were three Parent Challenges for the month of November, Parent-Teacher Conferences, the November PTA Meeting and the Parent Cooking Night with Ms. Howard. Due to your participation, the winners were as follows:
- Parent-Teacher Conferences - The House of Leadership earned 50 points
- PTA Meeting - The Houses of Beauty and Patience earned 50 points
- Parent Cooking Night - The House of Leadership earned 50 points
Attend the next events and help your child's House earn 50 points. The next Parent Challenge events will be STEAM Night on December 12 (time to be determined) and the next PTA meeting on Wednesday December 20 at 6:30pm. The PTA meeting is virtual and the login details will be placed in Class Dojo on that day. The House with the most family members in attendance will earn 50 points!
NYC Kids Rise
Save for College Program
The NYC Kids RISE Save for College Program provides families, schools, and communities with a way to work together to save for and invest in their children’s futures. It is a scholarship and savings program designed to make college and career training more accessible for public school students. In school year 2023-2024, students enrolled in kindergarten, first grade, and second grade at NYC public schools are eligible to participate, no matter their income or immigration status. If your child is in kindergarten, first, or second grade, they will be automatically enrolled in the Save for College Program and receive a free NYC Scholarship Account unless you choose not to participate and opt out by November 30.
Ms. Tanisha sent home the Opt-out letters to all K-2 families. If you do not wish to participate, simply sign and return the opt-out letter by Thursday, November 30. If you do not return the opt-out letter your child will be enrolled in the program. We will meet with K-2 families in January to help you complete the application process and begin saving for your child's future!
