MEET EMILY SEEFELDT
“I have been fortunate to have been with Red Wing for my entire career,” says Teaching & Learning instructional coach Emily Seefeldt. “I started in 2006 as an Early Childhood Special Education teacher at Colvill Family Center and Sunnyside Elementary. In 2012 I transitioned to teaching third grade at Burnside Elementary and in 2019 I moved into my current role.”
What does your position entail?
I work closely with Director of Teaching & Learning Martina Wagner supporting our curriculum and instruction work. As an instructional coach, I work with teachers across the entire district providing support and integration in curriculum, instruction, and Positive Behavioral Integration Strategies (PBIS) through collaboration, consultation, professional development, and job-embedded coaching. In addition, I coordinate our incident referral system and work with administration and student support services in establishing our processes and reviewing referrals from a system level for data analysis.
Please share a few PBIS happenings.
PBIS has been a K-12 framework in Red Wing. With this school year we are moving into an E-12 framework. This August, Colvill Family Center started PBIS cohort training. This is very exciting as we bring Winger Pride: safe, kind and responsible to our Little Wingers.
Sunnyside, Burnside, Twin Bluff, and the high school have all completed the two-year cohort training over the years, with Sunnyside being the most recent to complete.
Burnside Elementary and Twin Bluff Middle School each received a grant from the Choose Kindness Foundation this year to create sensory tool kits, support staff and student recognition, and hold celebrations around Winger Pride. As part of the grant we are focusing on four tenets of kindness:
being friendly
showing appreciation
reaching out and
offering help.
We have some upcoming Kindness weeks, focusing on a tenet a week with a menu of activities teachers can choose from for their students. Tied with one of our weeks both Burnside and Twin Bluff will be collecting non-perishable food for the Red Wing Food shelf.
What inspired you to become a teacher and then a coach for teachers?
I grew up around educators as my mom was a business manager for a special education cooperative and I spent a lot of time there in the summer. My first job in high school was even for them. Throughout high school, I wavered between choosing a few different career paths. I was fortunate in my last two years to spend 90 minutes a day interning in elementary and middle school classrooms. I also took every single class my high school offered related to child development. With these experiences, I knew with absolute certainty that I wanted to be a teacher.
Initially, I majored solely in early childhood education at the University of Wisconsin-Stout. The summer after my freshman year I worked at Camp Friendship, which is for children and adults with disabilities. I spent a fantastic summer as a camp counselor and when I returned to Stout in the fall I added special education to my program of study.
What is your favorite thing about your job?
It is hard to pick just one thing! I enjoy the many different aspects of my role. I have a passion for curriculum, especially literacy and PBIS systems focusing on the proactive and positive strategies we can use for the success of our students. If I had to pick just one thing, it would be coaching, collaborating, and supporting our teachers.
How do you spend your free time outside of school?
I am a perpetual learner so right now I am pretty busy with coursework for some classes I am taking, but the end of the semester is in sight! I love traveling and I am an avid reader. I also enjoy spending time with family and friends – especially as much time as possible with my nephew.

Help stop the spread of illness
We ask that you continue to be vigilant in monitoring your children for symptoms of illness and keeping them home when they are ill. Please do not send your student to school if they:
Have a fever of 100 degrees Fahrenheit or higher,
Have a sore throat or headache
Are coughing or sneezing
Have vomited or had diarrhea in the past 24 hours.
Students will be sent home if they become ill during the school day. Please be prepared to pick up your child as soon as possible.
Please refer to the influenza fact sheet linked here for more information or contact your child’s health care provider with any questions or concerns.
As a reminder, students must be fever free for at least 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication before returning to school.
Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our school community safe and healthy.
