BLOOMINGDALE NEWS
MARCH 2019
A Message from the Principal
Dear Bloomingdale Families,
Well, the year continues to move right along as we are finishing up with another busy month here at Bloomingdale Elementary School. I want to begin by thanking all the students, staff, and family members who joined us in the Winter Carnival Parade. Bloomingdale took second place this year in the “School Marching Group” division. Congratulations! Congratulations are also in order for all of the 4th and 5th grade students that took part in this year’s Spelling Bee. It takes a lot of courage to get up on stage in front of an audience and do anything, and all of the students showed remarkable poise. A special shout out goes to our very own Sophia McBride, who won this year’s competition! Your accomplishment is SUPERCALIFRAGILISTICEXPIALIDOCIOUS!
Rounding out the highlights for this month- The 4th grade class traveled to the Adirondack Mountain Club for their annual Snowshoe excursion, and the school celebrated 100 days of school by dressing up and donating to the penny pot.
The 4th graders have issued the school a challenge to commit 2000 Acts of Kindness by April 5th. Each class is busy filling buckets with acts of kindness that were performed by students in that class. Students will receive a special reward if they are able to reach their goal of 2000 by April 5th. To that end, if you are aware of an act of kindness that one of our students has undertaken outside of school, we would be happy to hear about it so we can recognize the student and add the act to their classroom bucket.
March promises to be another busy month with plenty of activities planned for March Madness, a visit and assembly with alumnus Patrick Darrah, and a Movie Night hosted by our Parents Club. Please refer to the important dates section in this newsletter for further details.
*Reminder to everyone that State Exams begin on Tuesday, April 2nd for 3rd, 4th, and 5th Grade students.
Looking forward to Spring!

GREETINGS from Nurse Meghan
Though it may seem hard to believe now, warm weather will eventually be here. Spring break isn’t too far away either and as some families travel during this time, here are a few things to keep in mind:
- If you’re flying, be sure to allow extra time to navigate the airport with children
- Talk about the security screening process with your child beforehand
- For ear pain that may develop during take-off and landing times children can chew gum or drink through a straw to help alleviate pressure
- If you’re travelling by car, be sure to check all car seats and booster seats before leaving and always wear a seatbelt
- Always keep a first aid kit in your car
Be sure to enjoy the sunshine with a broad-spectrum sunscreen on and reapply regularly!
Meanwhile, in the reality of winter, we are facing the heart of cough/cold and flu season. Please be sure to help protect your child from illness by ensuring they are practicing good handwashing, getting plenty of rest and eating well. Also as a reminder, any child with a fever should stay home from school and they must be fever-free for 24 hours before returning.
News from Farm to School
In Mid-February, Mrs. Lawless's 3rd Grade class did a sweet potato experiment: After learning about George Washington Carver's work with developing products and food out of crops such as peanuts and sweet potatoes, and learning about his artistic talent, we tried our own hand at painting with sweet potato puree. Over all, it was a success, although a bit gloppy! The other problem? The kids just wanted to eat all the paint!
