Eighth Grade Newsletter

April 19, 2015

Dear Parents:

M-Step testing continues this week. Eighth graders will take the ELA tests Monday-Thursday.

School Year Extended

Charlevoix Public Schools went over its allotted six (6) weather cancellation days by one (1) this past winter season. Because of that, the district has to extend its school year by one (1) school day. Thursday, June 4th will be a full day of school. Friday, June 5th and Monday, June 8th will be half days of school for students. Tuesday, June 9th and Wednesday, June 10th will be staff Professional Development days.

If your child sold items in the fundraiser right before Spring Break, you should have collected all the money and turned it in. Please contact Mrs. Garver if you have any questions.

Middle School 7th & 8th grade band students will have their final spring concert on Monday, May 18, 2015 at 7:00 P.M. We will be working around sports schedules to make sure we have our band members available for the concert that evening. If too many conflicts surface, we may move the concert date, but due to scheduling the auditorium in advance, we will try to stay with our original plan of Tuesday, May 18! It is very important that we get our Band Parent organization together and form an organization that can help the new director make the band program flourish. Any of you that have an interest in helping to form the corp group of the Band Parents, please contact me at 231 675-4800! Thanks, Mr. Stutzman!

Mrs. Bamberg would like to thank all the students who helped put together the yearbook. Her "Dream Team" did a fantastic job finishing the book last week.

Summer Writing Camp

If your student loves to write, this is a great opportunity for some fun writing experiences with area middle school students and teachers.

DC Parent Meeting

We will meet at 6:30 on Thursday, April 30 in the Middle/High School media center. This is a change from previous newsletters due to a sports conflict. If you are unable to attend, please contact me for the necessary paperwork.

You will need to complete the emergency medical form at the meeting or complete it at home and return it to me the next day. Information you need includes:

health insurance name and group numbers

physician's name and contact information

emergency contact information

current prescription and OTC medications

Travel Updates

There are several ways for you to follow along on our trip.

1. Follow us on Twitter: @ChxMiddleSchool

2. Like my class Facebook page: Mrs. Garver's Class

3. Join our Remind parents' group and get text messages or emails.

To join, text @cvxtrips to 81010 or send a blank email to cvxtrips@mail.remind.com.

We will go over this at the parent meeting, so don't worry if you are having technical difficulties.

DC Hotel

We will be staying at the Hyatt Fairfax in Fairfax, Virginia. There will be four students in each room. Chaperones will be across the hall or next door to students. Boys and girls will be on separate floors or in separate wings. Worldstrides provides trained chaperones in each hallway throughout the night.

Wreath Laying Candidates

Thank you to the many students who submitted essays last week. We will read them this week and hope to make a decision by Friday.

Four students will be chosen by a panel of judges to place a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns.

We will also choose some students to place flowers at the grave of Major Douglas Sloan, a Charlevoix graduate who is buried at Arlington.

Itinerary Updates

We are excited about the V-E Day Celebration that will take place Friday, May 8. The Arsenal of Democracy Flyover will include dozens of World War II aircraft flying in formations that represent various battles of the war.

It is your responsibility to make your final payments to Worldstrides. At this point they will only accept a credit card or cashier's check. Please do not send money to school.

Checks for earned spending money will be distributed at the parent meeting.

Sports Calendar

The first track meet will be the League Jamboree at East Jordan on Wednesday, April 22.

Thank you

As always, please contact us if you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions.
