High School Highlights
Weekly Updates from Big Walnut High School
March 12, 2021
There are only two weeks until Spring Break! Students and teachers will work hard during these first few weeks of 4th quarter to get as much learning in as possible! Third quarter grade cards will be available through PowerSchool on Monday, March 15 at 8:00am. There are a lot of celebrations and a lot of important information in this week's newsletter. Please read through it carefully and see what pertains to your family.
The scheduling process for students for next school year is now complete. Students and families will be able to review course requests in PowerSchool the week before Spring Break.
Important Announcements Concerning Prom and Graduation
The following information went out in an all-call this week. In case you missed it, please see below:
Junior/Senior Prom:
This week, we received clarification that the State of Ohio will allow dancing at prom with masks worn. We are working on additional details, but we are planning to have prom on Saturday, April 24, at Villa Milano. Since we will have capacity restrictions, only BWHS students will be permitted to attend. However, please understand that this is a fluid situation and will be contingent on Franklin County regulations.
Graduation Rain Date:
We are planning to hold a graduation ceremony, in our stadium, on Saturday, May 22, at 7:30. Due to COVID restrictions and protocol, an indoor ceremony is not an option for this year. Therefore, we will have a rain date for Sunday, May 23. The time is not determined yet and will be dependent on weather conditions.
April is the Month of the Military Child
Our community is dedicated to supporting local heroes and this includes our local businesses, schools and residents. The Purple Star Award for military-friendly schools recognizes schools that show a major commitment to students and families connected to our nation’s military. In an effort to better support students of military members in our community, Big Walnut Local Schools works to identify and inform teachers of the military-connected students in their classrooms and the special considerations and resources they should receive.
Thank you for your support! Be sure to wear your shirt on April 15th!!!

Honors Biology Students with their Reebob Babies
Congrats to Senior Kaelyn Lortz
Congratulations to senior Kaelyn Lortz who placed FIRST in the state Extemporaneous Public Speaking CDE held virtually on March 6. Kaelyn won at the district level to become one of ten finalists who participated. In this event, Kaelyn drew a topic at random and had thirty minutes to write and prepare speech that was between four and six minutes in length. At the conclusion, she answered oral questions about the topic from judges. Kaelyn’s state winning speech was on the question, “How has biotechnology improved lives?”
Kaelyn will have the opportunity to represent Ohio in the Extemporaneous Public Speaking Leadership Development Event as part of the 94th National FFA Convention & Expo in October where she will compete against state winners from all 50 states, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands.
