What's Happening!
THS held its annual College Fair this week with other 70 colleges/universities represented. Thank you to everyone that attended this great event. The THS/TMS PALS program had a paint party last week! Students painted a picture together, had lots of laughs and spent quality time together. Sophomores have been busy completing research papers in ELA classes and are scheduled to take the MCAS in March. This school year, there has been an increase in students using/possessing "vapes" (Please see below for additional information). Trimester 2 is winding down with exams right around the corner. Exams are scheduled for March 7th-9th and report cards to be distributed on March 16th.
Congratulations to our winter sports teams. Girls basketball will be recognizing our senior players tonight at 7:00 in the Kelleher Gymnasium. Good luck to members of the Wrestling and Swim & Dive teams as they will be competing in the state tournament this weekend.

Important Update: Vaping and Its Dangers
Over the past year, we have seen a drastic increase in the amount of students using and in possession of vape pens. For those of you not familiar with vaping, it is the act of inhaling a vapor produced by an electronic vaporizer or e-cigarette. The vapor can contain nicotine along with substances far worse. The liquids that are vaporized come in many different flavors; some emitting a fruit like odor, and students are led to believe vape juice is not harmful.
A quick connection can be made to cigarette advertising decades ago as vapes are being marketed to adolescents and are often promoted as a healthier alternative to smoking. Vapes can be used quickly and often without detection since little residual odor results from vaping, and they are usually small and easily disguised.
Vape juice is not regulated by the FDA, and therefore we often don’t know what is in the juice, nor do we know the long-term effects of inhaling these chemicals, particularly on the developing lungs and brains of teenagers. Additionally, nicotine is present in most vape juices and is extremely addictive and harmful to teens. You are also able to vape THC oil, which is the chemical compound in marijuana, discreetly as it to leaves little residual odor.
Vaporizers/e-cigarettes (“vape pens”) come in all different shapes. Some common styles we see look like a thick pen, a stylus for an iPad, a flash drive, or a small flask with a round chimney coming off the top. The devices are tiny and can easily be hidden on a person or blend in with standard backpack items. Like cigarettes, stores cannot sell vaping items to people under the age of 18.
School Consequences
In accordance with our handbook and School Committee Policy 2.2, students in possession of tobacco products or e-cigarettes (including vapes) will be suspended from school. Further, this is a violation of the MIAA chemical health rules and will result in loss of eligibility for a portion of the season.
We encourage you to talk to your child about the dangers of vaping and the consequences of having these products in school or at a school functions. For more information please visit the resources provided below.

Make sure to submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) application if you have not already done so. This application can be found at fafsa.gov. The FAFSA is the most important application in the financial aid process. All colleges and universities will require the FAFSA before determining a financial aid award. Colleges may also require students to complete a CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE (profileonline.collegeboard.org) and/or a college specific financial aid application. It is important to be aware of each college's financial aid deadlines - missing deadlines could result in missing out on financial aid.
