News from Conyers Learning Academy
January 25th, 2021
Dear CLA Families,
We are off to a great start to 2021 and the second half of our school year. It is great to have our in-person students back in the building and to see all our virtual students online each day.
As the weather continues to get colder and we have more frequent snow storms, we will continue to go outside for gross motor times and recess when available. We ask that all students come to school dressed appropriately to go outside. If your child is in need of gloves, hats, coat, or other winter clothes, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your classroom team or our administrative team.
With the potential for heavy snow tonight, Dr. Heinz shared the following message Sunday night. “This year has presented unique challenges, but also opportunities. Should the significant snow and potentially dangerous road conditions expected this week materialize, the District plans to have students and teachers learn and teach remotely instead of calling a snow day that must be made up at the end of the year. This will be the case for all winter weather closures we may face during the remainder of the 2020-21 school year. Should we need to implement a virtual learning day due to inclement weather, we will notify families through email, text and voice calls. The message will also be posted on our District and school websites, Facebook and Twitter pages and mobile app.” Please contact our office if you have any questions.
Looking ahead to March, CLA will continue to host their annual Read-O-Rama Week during the week of March 1st - March 3rd! While it may look a little different this year, we are excited to celebrate reading and the joy it brings to all readers. We will share more information as we get closer to the event. Typically CLA hosts their annual Open House Night during Read-O-Rama week. This year, all D15 schools will be hosting their Open House events in May.
Thank you for all your continued support this year to make school a fun and safe place for our students and staff. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions.

Picture Retake on February 2nd
CLA will be having picture retakes on Tuesday February 2nd. This is open to ALL students, BOTH in-person and virtual. If your child is new to CLA or missed the first picture day on Nov. 11th, they can have their picture taken at this time.
In-Person Students - If you would like to have your child retake their picture, please notify your child’s classroom teacher with a note, email, or phone call. On February 2nd, your classroom teacher will bring your child to the gym to have their picture taken.
Virtual Students - If you would like to have your child’s picture taken, please call the office and schedule an appointment to bring your child in. We will have appointments from 12:00-12:45pm. Call 847-963-3400.
Valentines Day 2021
We are now into January, which means Valentine’s Day will be here before we know it! In a typical school year, this would mean we’d be working with our PTAs to plan classroom parties and activities to mark the occasion. Due to the abundance of restrictions that continue to be in place throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, we will not be able to host classroom parties this year, or exchange treats/cards with classmates. Please do not send your child with treats or cards to pass out this year. Thank you in advance.
Student Health Certification
As students return to school, parents are required to certify that their child is symptom and exposure free each day. Before you send your student to school, a parent must sign the student’s Health Certification lanyard for that day. By signing the lanyard every day you are certifying that the answers to the questions and symptoms below are all ‘no’.
- Fever of 100.4° or higher
- New onset of moderate to severe headache
- Cough
- Sore Throat
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Shortness of breath
- Abdominal pain from unknown cause
- New congestion/ runny nose
- New loss of sense of taste or smell
- Nausea
- Fatigue from unknown cause
- Muscle or body aches
Have you been told by a contact tracer that your child has been in close contact with a COVID-19 positive person in the last 14 days?
At the end of each week a new card will be placed in your child’s lanyard for the following week. Please note that the card must be dated and signed each day prior to school.
If a child comes to school and they do not have a lanyard or their lanyard is not signed, your child will be assessed by the school nurse, and a reminder note will be sent home, or phone call will be made. If the student shows any symptoms of COVID, they will be brought to the Protective Health Space and will need to be picked up from school immediately.
Additionally, if a student develops any symptoms of COVID throughout the school day (see list above), they will be brought to the Protective Health Space and will need to be picked from school immediately.
If your child was exposed to anyone who tested positive over winter break, please call our school nurse to discuss the necessary quarantine timelines.
