Art Extravaganza: Fun for the Entire Family!
Art Extravaganza is unique to Western Avenue Elementary. The most incredible piece of this evening is that most of our activities are entirely student-led. Students perform live pieces of music, and they provide the instruction for our art workshops. Families have the opportunity to experience a variety of mediums, whether it be oil pastels, video making on I-Pads, watercolors, or pencil work. The experience is what we call a "flipped classroom," where the students are leading the instruction, and the families are producing work.
There are many photos that I would like to share with you in this newsletter. It truly was a magical night. There were SO many families who came out to support the Arts program, and we truly appreciate your participation in this evening! A very special thank you to Mrs. Kubas, Mrs. Pasqua, Mr. Hood for planning this event. Thank you to our teachers and families who came out to support the evening. The Arts program is such an integral part of Western Avenue Elementary, and we appreciate seeing our families for Art Extravaganza 2019!

Girls on the Run Community Project and Practice 5K!
Girls on the Run is not just about building confidence and leadership in our young ladies. Each year, our GOTR team chooses a service project to give back to their community. This year, the Girls on the Run team painted Kindness Rocks for their community service project. Each girl painted a rock to hide throughout the neighborhood. Keep your eyes open and spread the message of kindness, positivity, gratitude, and encouragement!
The team and coaches would like to give a big shout out to two generous donors:
- Jim Melcha from Jim Melka Landscaping and Garden Center in Mokena for donating all of the rocks.
- Steve from Ebel's Ace Hardware for donating all of the paint and brushes.

One District, One Book: "The Cricket in Times Square"
Written by George Selden in 1960, "The Cricket in Times Square" is a children's novel that tells the story of a cricket who accidentally travels to New York City and befriends a cat and a mouse while living in a newsstand in Times Square. "The Cricket in Times Square" won a Newbery Honor in 1961, and there is short video clip for your viewing below.
Western Avenue has a reading calendar along with trivia questions that homerooms will answer for the previous night's reading. We always give away little prizes to the winning homeroom for each day's trivia to make our reading fun! A very special thank you to Mrs. Mooney and Ms. Tobin for organizing our reading activities. Traffic Flow at Arrival and Dismissal
Parents, we understand that everyone is rushing to get their days started in the morning. However, we need to do a better job driving safely in the drop-off and pick-up lines. We have three staff members directing traffic at the front lot, two staff members posted at door I (primary playground), and multiple people posted at the playgrounds and blacktop area between the playgrounds. We also have one person stationed in the North parking lot. Please remember that there is a traffic flow. Students must be dropped off in the designated car lines. Please do not drop off your children on any other street or sidewalk other than the designated lines. Please do not wait in line to make sure your child walks to the door because that stops the flow for other parents behind you. And please be very mindful when you are pulling away from the car line. There should only be one priority for morning drop off and afternoon pick up--and that priority is the safety of all our kids at Western Avenue. If we all work together, we can ensure the safety of all students. Thank you!
Thank you for reading, and have a wonderful week!
