Social Justice Week 2014
Community Engagement Opportunities
Summer and Post-Graduation Opportunities
Social Justice Week 2014 is a week dedicated to education, empowerment and activism. By focusing on a different issue everyday we strive to educate Wesleyan students, faculty and the Buckhannon community about forms of injustice that occur locally and globally. Topics discussed include poverty, gender inequality, health, and modern day slavery. The week will conclude with a day of peace. A diverse representation of unique issues and organizations will be participating. With multiple events each day, everyone is encouraged to seek out issues that they’re passionate about. This week is the perfect opportunity to learn more, connect with others and become inspired to make a difference in the world.
Our overall theme for this year is taking action, based upon the inspiring quote: “There is no wrong time to do the right thing.”-Charles M. Blow

Volunteers packaged almost 10,000 meals for hunger relief efforts around the world.
2.) Powderpuff Against Poverty Football Game: Wesleyan Intramural Field (beside the baseball field), 7:30pm-9:30pm
Thanks to all who donated hygiene items! 91 items were collected and will be donated to the Parish House!
TUESDAY: Gender
1.) Immigration Chapel Service: Meditation Chapel, 11am
Rev. Judy Vetter speaks on immigration issues.
2.) Be Hope to Her: Wesley Chapel Stairs, 4pm-5pm
3.) Mara Keisling: Social Hall, 7pm
We are excited to have guest speaker Mara Keisling speaking about gender justice. She is the founding Executive Director of the National Center for Transgender Equality. Mara is a transgender-identified woman and a parent. As one of the nation’s leading voices for transgender equality, Mara has appeared on news outlets and is regularly quoted in hundreds of national and local print and broadcast media.
Since NCTE was founded in 2003, the organization was part of coalition efforts that have won significant advances in transgender equality.
WEDNESDAY: Health
1.) Social Justice Week Choral Concert: Wesley Chapel, 5:00pm
The Social Justice week choral concert will feature the WVWC Concert Chorale and Concentus Vocum, conducted by R. Daniel Hughes, and accompanied by Kayoko Funada. The concert will consist of choral works that relate to social justice and human suffering. Pieces performed will include David Conte's Elegy for Matthew, Joseph Byrd's To Elinor Wylie, Denise Broadhurst's The Peace of Wild Things, and several spirituals and South African freedom songs.
2.) Jump Rope for Heart: Social Hall, 6-8pm
This event is hosted by the WE LEAD Health and Wellness team. Jump Rope For Heart is an educational fund development program that is co-sponsored by AAHPERD (American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance) and the American Heart Association. These programs promote physical education and provide children with knowledge of heart disease and stroke while raising funds for cardiovascular disease research, stroke research, and health education.
Organizations on campus or individuals collect money in the weeks leading up to the event, or they simply make a small donation at the door on the day of the event. We provide music, jump ropes, and refreshments. We have group competitions, for example, to see who can jump rope the longest without interruption. Local businesses donate prizes, such as gift cards and coupons, which are drawn throughout the course of the event. At the end, the organization that raises the most money wins the grand prize! At our past two events, we raised over $1,450 and had 217 people participate.
THURSDAY: Modern Day Slavery
1.) End Slavery Petition: Aladdin Cafeteria, 11am-12:30pm
Come and sign the petition for U.S. Governors to Stop Child Trafficking in the US.
It’s estimated that over 100,000 children are forced into prostitution in the US annually. “We need to address both the demand and the supply in this industry. Ask your governor to make the fight against the sex trafficking of minors a priority.” –Covenant House.
2.) Stand for Freedom: Wesley Chapel Stairs and Prayer Room, 6pm- 9pm Friday
We will be standing for the estimated twenty seven million people today who are presently subjected to modern day slavery. Contemporary slavery comes in many shocking forms: sexual slavery, bonded labor, forced labor in countless settings and more. It’s time that we ignite a conversation about this issue in order to expose it and encourage action to be taken.
Join us in raising awareness about the unacceptable circumstances that millions of people must face every day.
We will have music during daylight hours, and snacks and activism activities for the duration of the event.
FRIDAY: Peace
1.) I Scream for Freedom: Wesley Chapel Stairs, 12-1:30pm
Come join us for an ice cream party in front of the Chapel during the second day of our Stand for Freedom event. Join us in conversation about modern day slavery and how we can make a difference.
2.) Peace Luminaries: Wesley Chapel Stairs, 8:30pm-11:30pm
At the conclusion of Social Justice Week we will be illuminating the Wesley Chapel stairs and center of campus with the vision of and hope for peace in our world. During Social Justice Week, elementary school students, Wesleyan students, Churches, and youth groups will draw or write what peace means to them on paper bags. The display will begin at sundown. We invite everyone from the Buckhannon community to come and visit!
* In case of bad weather, we will move the display inside the Wesley Chapel.

Oxfam America CHANGE Initiative--Apply by April 1st!
Have you ever wanted to...
- Volunteer and get petition signatures at a concert?
- Campaign for change at the headquarters of big companies?
- Host an event to raise awareness about hunger, poverty, and injustice?
If you're a college student – or know someone who is – and want to enhance your leadership skills and become a part of a social justice movement, then our CHANGE Initiative is perfect for you.
Each year, our CHANGE Initiative uses leadership and advocacy training to engage a group of US undergraduate students in the global fight against poverty, hunger, and injustice. Students transform this knowledge into action back on campus and in their communities.
"CHANGE provides good support, confidence, the ability to share and hear stories and knowledge from others, establishes connections with students all over the US, is an opportunity to meet other great students, who share your goals and values, and who become your friends." — Megan Whitacre, 2010 CHANGE Leader, Ball State University
After your year as a CHANGE Leader, you'll have skills that will last a lifetime and become part of an incredible network of activists all around the world. CHANGE Alumni have attended meetings of the World Trade Organization and the G8 leaders, spoken at the UN Youth Assembly, and founded their own human rights organizations – to name just a few accomplishments.
