April 4, 2016

"The Lord our God be with us, as he was with our fathers. May he not leave us or forsake us." 1 Kings 8:57

Staff Meeting

We have our monthly staff meeting tomorrow, April 5, after school. As such all students, including GOAL, who are still here, will be in after care from 3:10-4:00 pm. Van Pool will operate on a delayed schedule. The van will plan to leave the school at approximately 3:45. We anticipate the arrival time of the van at the drop off location will be approximately 4:15.

Mother's Day Shopping

Check out our Gator Gifts for great Mother's Day gifts. One of our classes is making sugar scrubs.

Open House and Lunch & Learn

Open House and Lunch & Learn are scheduled for Monday, April 18. Please invite anyone who may be interested in our programs. If you would like printed or email information to distribute, please contact the office.

No Graduation & Spring Fling this year

Since there will be no new GOS High School graduates in 2016, we are making some changes to our calendar. Although Spring Fling was originally scheduled for Thursday, May 19, we will not have our evening program this year. We will instead have a program on the last day of school during the day. Be on the look out for more information coming soon. GOAL will still have their evening program on Friday, May 20.

Summer Plans

Please turn in Summer Registration Forms ASAP! We are working on summer staffing now.
For your planning purposes, the following are the Green Oaks summer dates.
  • Green Oaks will be closed the weeks of June 6 and July 4. GOAL will not operate these weeks.
  • Green Oaks Summer Camp Week 1: June 20-24
  • Green Oaks Summer Week 2: July 25-29
  • GOAL will continue to operate programming throughout the summer. We will be open each week, except the weeks of June 6, July 4 and August 15. While we will be open the same hours and still have the same modules, there will be some changes to the daily schedules just to keep things fresh. GOAL students are not eligible to sign up for Green Oaks summer camps.
  • Summer registration forms were sent home, but please let us know if you need another copy.
  • Tentatively, our first day back to school for both GOS and GOAL is August 22. We apologize for sending the wrong date in last week's Gator Gab.

We Need Beads!

Do you have any beads you'd be willing to donate for crafting? Creative Arts classes in GOAL need beads for making crosses.

Gator Shredding

Gator Shredding is a vocational skills class in GOAL. If you would like to make a monetary donation to the school, Gator Shredding will shred papers for you. The papers are stored in a locked cabinet until class-time.

Green Team

If you have any unused pots for plants, Green Team would love to have them. The Green Team has been busy planting seeds and re-potting seedlings in the green houses. They recently planted donated iris and lily bulbs in front of Green Oaks. If you find yourself thinning your flower beds this spring, the Green Team would enjoy caring for your extra plants.

2016 Special Needs Prom

The Lady Kats Volleyball Team invites students age 15-21 to the 2016 Special Needs Prom on April 9 from 6:00-9:00 pm at the Kennedale High School Cafeteria. Food, music, and pictures will be provided to guests free of charge. There will also be a pop-up salon available for the girls from 12:30-3:00 in Room 815. Hair, make-up, and nails will be done by professional stylists and the Lady Kats volleyball players. Everything is free of charge. Girls attending the prom are welcome to take part in what ever aspect they are comfortable with. Please RSVP to Jennifer Patterson at pattersonj@kisdtx.net if you will be attending.

Arlington Police Department Open House

The Arlington Police Department invited advocates and neighbors within the Mental Health and Intellectual Developmental Disabilities communities to an open house on Thursday, April 21st at 5:30 p.m. at 6000 W. Pioneer Parkway, Arlington, TX 76013. Join the conversation about APD's approach to training while you tour their facility and interact with officers and staff.

Club 321 & Teen Scene

Club 321 is a social club sponsored by the Down Syndrome Partnership of North Texas and Green Oaks School for adults with intellectual disabilities over the age of 18. Club 321 holds two to three events per month. Some of the events include: karaoke, bowling, movie night, talent show, going out to eat, game night, annual Prom, Masquerade Ball, and 50's Sock Hop. The events usually take place on a Friday or Saturday night and last for two and a half hours. Dinner is provided at most events, except dances. Each participant must RSVP by email for each event. In addition, each member is expected to pay $5.00 for each activity. Members, paid staff (coaches), and volunteers attend, while no parents or caregivers are allowed to stay for the events. This gives the members an opportunity to be independent and interact with their peers in their own way and at their own pace. It also gives the members' parents and caregivers a night off. Participation in Club 321 requires membership. For more information on Club 321, email Michelle at club321friends@hotmail.com.

Teen Scene is a social club modeled after Club 321 for teens (ages 13-18) with Down syndrome. The cost to participate is $5.00 per event and the group meets at least once a month. All events will be supervised by Down Syndrome Partnership of North Texas staff and volunteers. For more information about Teen Scene, email Liz at elizabeth@dspnt.org.

Club 321 and Teen Scene will have at least three combined events each year. The next combined event is a service project on Saturday, April 16 from 12:00-3:00 pm at Green Oaks School. Club 321 and Teen Scene will be putting together bags for the Arlington Life Shelter. Pizza will be provided. RSVP is required for this event and the cost is $5.00.
