HMS Bearcat Bulletin

September 2018

A Note from Ms. Buschmann

School is off to a rousing start. It was great getting to spend the first days back building relationships, getting to know one another, and reviewing expectations and practicing appropriate behaviors together. The energy in the building is palpable and we are off to a great academic start as well.

While our expectations of students have not changed very much, our approach to teaching and enforcing our community standards of Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Safe, and Be a Learner have. We continue to teach our students not only to know and be able to do academic tasks but also how to be good people and good workers. Look for updates on our PBIS system throughout the year.

Back to School Bash

HMS Student Council celebrated Back to School and our first 7th and 8th-grade football scrimmage with the Back to School Bash on September 6. The Hotdog Guy brought great food and student council members rocked their games. They worked really hard to make this a great event and we thank all of the parents and staff members that helped get materials together, set up and clean up. We couldn't have done it without all of the additional help.

Online Registration and Open House

Thank you so much for your cooperation with online registration. Any change can be uncomfortable, but the process was so much smoother than collecting piles of paper for each child. I hope you agree that on the parent side, it was easier as well. Most families that I worked with only took 15 minutes or so to complete everything!

We are already thinking about what we can add to our registration day to make Open House even smoother.

Student of the Month

The student of the month program at HMS seeks to recognize kids who best display the character trait of the month. For the month of August, we highlighted Respect. Congratulations to all of the nominees and winners. For the month of September, we will recognize students who display Responsibility in an extraordinary way. At the assembly, we highlighted the following video that shows responsibility isn't just about getting things done- it's a little more.

The MakerSpace is a great place to try to build things- this challenge was a hurricane-resistant structure; preparing for the Back to School Bash; putting together a classroom-sized world map in Geography with Mr. Schwenck; Math games and critical thinking in Mrs. Stephan's exploratory class; Mrs. Alferman's class is learning about life science and, the environment, and the research project with Monarch butterflies; and how many drops can you get on a penny- with a twist- in Dr. Stiegman's science class.
