Classroom Happenings

Last week we practiced identifying and describing cause and effect relationships in our own lives, as well as in the lives of the characters in "The City of Ember". Ember is running out of supplies and we are all excited to read on and discover their solution! We have continued our study of angles, polygons, and circles. This past week students compared and contrasted polygons, identified lines of symmetry, and solved problems using a circle graph. Everyone successfully completed the Analytic Writing Assessment. After working hard and staying focused for three 45 minute periods, the students turned in their completed essay. Thank you for sending your kids to school rested and well fed! It definitely made a difference in the testing environment.

Mirrors in the Making!

What's Next?

This week we will be finishing "The City of Ember" and consolidating our understanding of cause/effect relationships and main ideas/details. On Thursday students will be participating in a compare and contrast activity. We will be watching the movie “The City of Ember" and finding similarities and differences between the book and movie. In order for your child to participate in this activity the permission slip that was send home last week must be signed and returned to school. In math, we will be concluding our geometry unit by exploring circumference, creating a math book that reviews the concepts from the unit, and then taking a test on Thursday. On Wednesday students will have the opportunity to participate in the Lil' Shoppers Shoppe Class. This is an opportunity provided by our PTO. A store with gift items ranging in price from $0.50 to $10.00 will be set up in the art room. Students will have thirty minutes to purchase and wrap gifts for friends and family. On Thursday we will have our class Holiday Party.

Movie Night- December 20th

This Thursday, December 20, the fifth grade classes will be hosting a movie night in the West Homer gym to raise field trip money. We will be playing “Arthur's Christmas”. Food and drink will be served. We are looking for parents interested in supporting the event by helping prepare and serve and food. If you are interested please let me know! Holiday Party

From 2:15-3:00 on Thursday our class will be having a holiday party. Students will have the opportunity to play games and bring in food to share. A food sign-up sheet was sent home last week (on the same sheet of paper as the "City of Ember" permission slip). If you are willing to bring in food items for our party please let me know by sending the sign-up sheet back to school with your child or shooting me an email. Thanks so much!

White Elephant Game- Thursday

As a part of our holiday party, our class will be playing White Elephant. Each student is encouraged to bring in a wrapped item from home (do not buy something new) with a value of $5 or under. The gifts will be placed in the middle of the room and used to play the White Elephant game. Everyone will open one package and come home with something different than they brought. This is completely optional, and additional packages will be provided for students who are unable to bring their own. Please keep the value of the wrapped item under $5.00. If you have any questions or concerns please let me know!

Holiday Food Drive- LAST WEEK

West Homer students and staff will be collecting cans and nonperishable food items between December 3rd and December 18th. The classes will be competing against each other to see who can provide the most food for Share the Spirit. There will be a box labeled "Putney" outside of Mr. Marshall's office for students to place their food items on their way in to school.

A Note from the Library

We had our first “Lexile Saturday” where a group of teachers got together and looked up lexile numbers for books and put labels on books. We had a lot of fun and identified books to recommend to students! Thank you to the members of the Homer Kachemak Bay Rotary and Bill Worsfold for helping us out working right alongside of us!!!!!!! Thank you Cheryl for all the extra time you put in to make the day run smoothly.

********Movie Night at Homer Movie Theater coming in January!!!!******************
