JISD Libraries Have the Write Stuff!

February is the kick-off to our inaugural JISD Writes Together event. This month-long celebration of the power of writing and raising our voices is a new initiative of JISD Library Services and the Friends of JISD Libraries. It is intended to promote the link between libraries, literacy, and legacy. This year, we've chosen the amazing picture book, What Do You Do with a Voice Like That? The Story of Extraordinary Congresswoman Barbara Jordan by Chris Barton. All month long there will be opportunities to engage with this mentor text in myriad ways. Mrs. Ortiz, the Judson High School librarian, is hosting audience-specific write-alongs, and we're even creating a JISD Writes Together Digital Magazine, which will be published by our very own VMHS Graphic Design & Illustration Department, where students, faculty/staff, families, and community members can submit their original works for publication.

JISD Celebrates Diversity: Black History Month

JISD Celebrates Diversity is an ongoing initiative that follows right along with our Read Woke program. We aim to provide reading recommendations and ideas for lesson planning as well as pleasure reading that bring to light the marginal groups of society in an effort to empathize with and support these groups.

Our JISD Celebrating Diversity begins this month, highlighting Black History. Please access our Celebrating Black Authors Newsletter and the Black History Month Unsung Heroes Board using the buttons below.

Look for Women's History Month next month, Asian-American & Pacific Islander Month in May, and LGBT Pride Month in June.

January 2021 Off with a Book BANG!

I've been able to read 10 books during this first month of 2021! If you wonder how I do it, I use my Sora app EVERY DAY! I read an occasional physical or e-book, but audiobooks allow me to "read" while I'm driving, doing chores, and exercising! Essentially, I listen to a book anytime I am not interacting with another human.

If you haven't experienced our Sora app, HERE are the directions. Please share with your students too!

I am also reading books with my two boys. I am reading Wonder by R.J. Palacio with my 8-year-old, The Other Wes Moore by Wes Moore with my 11-year-old, and Black Brother, Black Brother by Jewell Parker Rhoades with them both. We are members of the Stephen Curry Literati Book Club.
