Adler Gazette

It's a great day to be a Gator! (NOVEMBER EDITION)

From the Principal's Desk

This month at Adler, we have so much to be thankful for. As cliche as it may be, November is a time for reflection and appreciation.

We are thankful for our very first Veterans Day celebration. Our students, staff, and community came together to honor veterans who have a direct connection to our building. Students were able to sit with their veteran parents, grandparents, and extended family members while a picture slideshow was presented, songs were sung, and interviews were conducted by fourth and fifth grade students.

We are thankful for our Fall Sing Concert–our first and second graders did a superb job during their pajama-themed performance. All of their practice and hard work certainly paid off! Adler’s Choir was able to attend the Chicago Wolves game and perform for a packed house! A special thank you to our Music Director, Ms. Julie Perez for her dedication with both of these events.

We are thankful for our Board of Education members–they toured Adler Park on November 15th. They were able to see our scholars in the classroom and observe teachers in their element. Specifically, they were able to see Mrs. Walker’s third grade classes engage in an ELA lesson and Mrs. Wisek’s kindergarten class learn the basics of coding.

We are thankful for our annual Family Reading Night. We had around 100 readers join us in their pajamas to enjoy a few great titles with our school librarian, Ms. Carr.

Enjoy the upcoming holiday weekend with your family and loved ones (11/23-11/27). Adler will be ready for your return Monday, November 28th!

PBIS-Check-in/Check-out

Adler’s Positive Behavior Intervention Service (PBIS) team is going to roll out a Check-in/Check-out (CICO) system. In the most basic sense, CICO is the pairing of a student to an adult mentor in the building. Students will “check-in” with their mentor in the morning before school starts and “check-out” with the same mentor at the end of the school day.

The CICO program provides positive daily performance feedback for students who may benefit from daily positive adult attention. This adult will be another staff member at Adler who is not your child's classroom teacher. Research shows that students who receive positive praise for their daily actions make better choices throughout their day. This intervention also provides a positive communication link between home and school, sets students up for success each morning, and can be used to develop student self-management. Furthermore, Adler is excited to roll out CICO because it can:

  • Provide structure in a student’s day

  • Create accountability

  • Provide teacher feedback to student and parents

  • Create internal motivation

  • Improve student behavior

  • Increase academic success

  • Create a stronger home-school connection

If your student is recommended for the CICO program, you will be notified via email and further information will be provided.

A Note from the Nurse

Dear Adler Parents and Guardians,

We are into the heart of cold and flu season and seeing student absences increase as a result. A few reminders to help us keep our students and staff healthy during this time.

  • If during the last 24 hours your child had a fever of 100.4 degrees or greater or has vomited, the student must remain at home until they are fever-free without fever reducing medication and vomit free for 24 hours.

  • If your child has these or additional symptoms or is not feeling well enough to participate fully in the activities of the day including PE and recess, please call the Attendance Line at 847-932-0054 and make sure to list all symptoms your child is experiencing such as sore throat, cough, upset stomach, rash, congestion, runny nose, sneezing, etc… Our school district is required to submit information to the Lake County Health Department to help track the prevalence of flu-like symptoms in our community.

If you are able to provide this information when reporting the absence, it will prevent our nurse from having to follow up with you. If at anytime symptoms change or you receive a diagnosis, please contact Mrs. Panov at 847-932-0054 or via email.

Thanks!

Kathy Panov

Student Activities and Ways to Get Involved

Adler Park Basketball Tournament (4th and 5th grade only)

Basketball intramurals start in December. 4th and 5th grade boys and girls will be learning skills and strategies in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. Attendance in intramural sports conducted at Adler Park is voluntary on the part of the student. It is recommended that the student makes a serious commitment to this activity, not only for themselves, but for the sake of their teammates.

Morning practices start promptly at 7:05 and end at 8:05. The tournament game schedule will be handed out as soon as it’s made available. All games will be played at Butterfield School. Please call Mr. Carollo (847) 362-7275 ext. 1336 or email with questions. A permission slip will be sent home to secure your student’s participation.

5th grade students will also have the opportunity to join intramural cheerleading. Practice times and permission slips will be provided by Nancy McNett in the near future. Cheer performances will take place at Butterfield school during the basketball tournament. Students will also need a signed permission slip in order to participate in cheerleading.

Nothing will be off limits as they will let their creativity and innovative ideas take flight! They will have the freedom to design, engineer, fabricate, create and build as they choose.

There is no cost to participate. Maker Monday is an after school club that will meet from 2:45-3:45 pm on Mondays.

There is a limit to the number of students per grade level, and a lottery system has been implemented to ensure equal access to registration.
