A Message from the Principal
As the close of the academic year, I would like to offer my sincere thanks to each member of our staff - both teaching and support staff. All the staff of Cerdon College Merrylands work very hard to ensure each of our students is able to achieve her potential. I would also like to thank our parents for their continuing assistance and support during 2016.
Congratulations to each of our students, who have worked hard during 2016 to continue to grow their academic skills across the year. Their reports reflect their efforts over the past year.
Joseph could not ignore Mary’s pregnancy, but he had an exceptional large-heartedness, so that he preserved a future for Mary even though she had apparently wronged him.
If he had gone to sleep in a frame of mind to avenge his honour, he would not have been ready to have the deepest levels of his consciousness stirred in the way God wanted. In the deep sleep of a just and good man, Joseph was enlightened as to the divine dimension of Mary’s pregnancy. The old cycle of human history, literally generation after generation, was being broken. Something utterly new had happened.
You and I are just as likely to receive an intuition as to God’s plan for us in the depths of sleep: who we really are, who we are destined to be, where we fit into God’s plan for transforming the whole of creation. When we get these instructive moments in our sleep, what can we do when we wake up? We can do what Joseph did: get up and do what is needed to fulfil the message.
We could pause for a moment to thank Joseph for showing what dreams can be made of. Tonight might be the night!
Fr Michael Tate
As the above reflection by Fr Michael states, Joseph was called to action following the immaculate conception of of Mary. Pope Francis called all pilgrims to action at World Youth Day this year, he urged those present to “get up of the couch”. God calls each of us in very different ways, it is up to us to be attuned to God’s call and be ready to answer this Advent season.
God Bless

2016 HSC
The students received 91 Band 6 results (9% of all results), 432 Band 5 results (42.6% of all results) and 331 Band 4 results (32.6% of all results). This is encouraging as it means 84.2% of all HSC results were a Band 4, 5 or 6 result (the top 3 bands) and only 2.7% of results were in the lowest bands - Band 1 and 2.
Special congratulations to:
Jamie Lipsham - First in the State in 2 Unit VET Entertainment
Melissa Cuadros Lu – Third in State Spanish Extension
And to our 2 Distinguished Achievers:

Food Drive Delivery
Thank you very much to all the families who supported our Food Drive. Cerdon College was able to deliver a sizeable contribution to the House of Welcome at Carramar on Tuesday 13th December.
As seen in the photo our school bus was overloaded with the generosity of the Cerdon community. The staff of the House of Welcome were very appreciative of the donations and assured us that everything would be put to good use by people who are struggling to feed their families.
We look forward to continuing our support of the House of Welcome.
Thank you once again for your generous donations of food and other products.

St Patrick's Church Hill - Breakfast Service
Saturday 10th December marked the one year anniversary of the Breakfast Service at St Patrick's at Church Hill. Cerdon College students and staff have assisted this term in a number of ways to ensure that this initiative of Sr Fidelis SM remained an effective ministry of service for the Marist Sisters. Some of the many tasks that the students and teachers have performed included: food preparation, food service, washing and drying up, clearing tables and interacting with the breakfast guests of St Patrick's.
We look forward to continuing in this ministry in 2017.

2016 ended just like it began.. with a lot of excitement! Year 8 students enthusiastically participated in the Knowledge Challenge, the last for the year. After months of planning, the Cuberider project, launching students’ experiments into space, was realised, blasting into space early Saturday morning. This was certainly an exciting end to what has been a very enriching year.
Congratulations to all the students involved in enrichment programs throughout the year. Best wishes to those students who are taking many more programs over the holidays…we look forward to hearing about your amazing experiences next year!
The Year 8 Knowledge Challenge
They waited very patiently all year for their turn to come, and finally Year 8 students had their chance at the knowledge challenge. As always, the library was buzzing with very enthusiastic girls who seemed to know almost everything, answering questions on a variety of key learning areas as well as sport, entertainment and current affairs. Each heat was closely contested, with each team doing their best to represent their house. In the end the Grand Final was between Marcellin and McOscar. Well done to Zali Furness, Sophia Severin and Holly Johnson from Marcellin for making the grand final. Congratulations to Paige Jabour, Victoria Georges, Janissa Carrozza, Bongiwe Mpofu and Shanice Seaib from McOscar for winning the Year 8 Knowledge Challenge for 2016.
Cuberider
On Saturday 10th December AEST at 12:26 am the Cuberider project was successfully launched into space from Japan's Tanegashima Space Centre, making it Australia’s first mission to the International Space Station. On board the H-IIB unmanned rocket, SAGAN, a small integrated sensor, carried the experiments of students from 60 schools across Australia, including Cerdon College. Once on the International Space Station, the data from SAGAN will be beamed back to schools every two days, allowing the students to analyse their experiments as they collect information.
Cerdon’s Cuberider team consisted of students from Year 8-10. After learning to code, the students were able to devise an experiment which tested the level of moisture on the ISS, using the integrated sensor. At the launch party last Friday, the girls were able to hear from the innovators behind the Cuberider project and some of the students from other schools. This mission is Australia’s first to the International Space Station and it has been such a privilege for Cerdon College to be part of it. Thank you to Mr Tham for his support and for guiding the girls in their first space mission. Thank you to the IT staff and Mrs Sylaprany for their efforts throughout the project. Congratulations to Flavia Lu Year 8, Alexandria Makary Year 9, Dima Ahmad, Amanda Awad, Anh Nguyen, Teresa Tran, Lidia Yimer and Janine Udan from Year 10 for being part of space history!

…. SEEKING MENTORS
Would you like to give something back to your community?
Catholic Education Diocese of Parramatta’s Post School Options Team is looking for suitable employers who can offer one-on-one mentoring in the workplace for secondary students. We are seeking people employed in small businesses who would like to give something back to their community and join this valuable and worthwhile program, on a voluntary basis.
The volunteer mentor, hosts the student in the workplace for one day per week for 2 school terms (May to September, excluding school holidays). The mentor is both a personal and professional role model for the student. All mentors are provided with complimentary mentor training and receive a TAFE Certificate of Attainment ‘Mentoring in the Community’ for their participation.
Employers can be from any industry, as an individual in a trade area – clerical, administration, hairdressing and beauty or connected to a major employer for example, Bunnings or Woolworths, etc.
Please consider this call for assistance so that this program can continue to supply a valuable service to students in our Catholic communities. If you would be interested in becoming a mentor or finding out more information, please contact:
