2nd Grade Happenings
January 5, 2017
Welcome back and Happy New Year! I hope that everyone had a nice and relaxing break! The 2nd grades came back well rested and ready to learn (I think :))
Math
This week we started a new chapter titled: Using Bar Models: Addition and Subtraction. In this chapter, your child will learn to use bar models to solve addition and subtraction problems. Drawing bar models is an important math skill that makes it easier for children to visualize and solve complicated problems. Some of the models they will use are:
- addition models for joining sets
- subtraction models for taking away sets
- comparison models for comparing sets.
Here is a link to a You Tube video of a basic lesson:

If you would ever like to see Bar Modeling in action in 2nd grade you are welcome to join us for math Monday-Thursday from 10:45-11:25. (You may want to let me know if advance that you are coming just in case I have changed my schedule for that day)
Social Studies
We are still working on our Social Studies unit titled "Our Government". This week we learned about
- our state government
- our country's government
- signs of citizen pride - flags, Pledge of Allegiance, our national anthem, patriotic symbols, and national holidays.
MAP Testing
It is that time of the year to do the 2nd round of MAP testing. Second Grade will be testing on Tuesday 1/17, Wednesday, 1/18, and Thursday 1/19. We will be testing from 10:15-11:30 each of those mornings. Please make sure your child does not have any appointments scheduled on these days during that time frame.
Are you willing to share your career with the school?
On Thursday of Catholic Schools Week (February 2nd), the school is going to have a career fair in the afternoon for the whole school to attend. We are looking for parents who are willing to come in and share their career with the school. We will have tables set up in the gym for parents to sit at and talk to the students as they walk around. You can come dressed in your profession, bring something related to your profession (business card, pencil, prop, etc...). If you are interested and/or willing to participate please contact Mrs. Needham for more information.

THANK YOU!
As I receive gifts from students I always write it down on a piece of paper so I can personally send that student a Thank You note. I did just this as I was receiving many gifts from all of you for Christmas. However, while I was cleaning my house over break, I think I recycled that piece of paper.
However, I want to make sure that for those who did give me a Christmas present, I am very grateful. You were all very generous. Thank you very much from the bottom of my heart!
