Children's Theater Field Study Information and FAQ's!
Please contact Olivia Edge at oliviaedge@hotmail.com if you have any additional questions. Here is the schedule for field trips to the children's theatre this year:
Kindergarten--"Go, Dog! Go the musical," Tuesday, April 18th, 10:00
1st grade—“A Year With Frog and Toad,” Friday, October 7th, 10:00
2nd grade—“Grace for President,” Wednesday, October 26th, 9:45
3rd and 4th grades—“The Best Christmas Pageant Ever,” Friday, December 16th, 10:00
5th grade—“Bud, Not Buddy,” Friday, March 24th, 9:45
1. Where is the play being held?
The Children's Theatre of Charlotte is located at the ImaginOn Library:
300 E 7th Street, Charlotte, NC 28202.
This is approximately 24 miles
2. What is the approximate length of the play?
The plays and musicals are usually a little over an hour, but less than an hour and a half. The play start time varies per production between 9:45 and 10:00. The buses will be lined up to pick up children when the show is over (directed and organized by the fabulous staff of the theatre). There is a beautiful new park (First Ward Park) directly across the street from the theatre if you would like to have lunch there (depending upon the weather). The theatre will send specific instructions for bus drop off, pick up, and parking to our school before each scheduled trip.
3. Was the grant funded?
Yes, the grant was funded! However, there has been an increase in transportation costs this year by the district, so we are asking for a $3 fee per student to cover the difference. If students are unable to pay, the PTO will cover the difference with parent donations.
4. What will be the cost of the play for each of the students?
We are asking for $3 per child. Again, please don't let inability to pay prevent a child from participating.

4 School Collaboration
Kindergarten
Kindergarten would like the other teams to bring a copy of their 1st nine weeks essential learning common assessment in math. We would like to use our time to continue working on our common assessments and bring ideas for number talks.
First
First grade teachers should bring 4 copies of common assessments (CAs) that go with their essential math standards for quarter 1 (one copy for each school to look at). We're going to discuss rigor, expectations, and teaching ideas surrounding the essentials and CAs. (We understand that our essential learning standards are different.)
Second
We would like for the other second grade teams to bring their plan outlines for the government unit. We also would like for them to bring any activities, project ideas, assessments, or book titles. It would be nice if each school could bring one hard copy of all of the above to share with teams. (this would be three hard copies from each school attending). Thanks!
Third
We decided as a grade level that we wanted to focus our collaboration meeting on math, number talks specifically. Our math coach, Michael Jerrell, has agreed to join our team to assist with our discussion and share tools for future number talks. We ask that other third grade teams be prepared to share and discuss their experiences and resources regarding number talks, both positive and negative. We need to know what has worked and what has not. Please bring tools to assist with sharing these experiences (e.g. flip charts).
Fourth
We would like to discuss science and social studies as a fourth grade unit on this day. Would you please ask the teachers to bring a copy of their science and social studies standards as well as any good ideas for projects and extended learning activities that they use in science and social studies to share? Thank you. Laptops optional.
Fifth
Fifth Grade Teachers coming to MGES for Collaborative Tuesday will be discussing Number Talks. We’d like for teams to:
· Bring examples (printed copies, if possible) of Math Talks done in the classroom for any or all operations
· Be ready to discuss the questions below:
1. What do you do during Number Talks?
2. How often do you do Number Talks?
3. How do you actively engage ALL students, not just the eager few?
4. What are the benefits you have seen by doing Number Talks in your classroom?
5. What are the drawbacks of doing Number Talks in your classroom?
Beautification Committee Notes from September 6
Minutes from Beautification
Lost and Found – a blurb about lost and found will be put in each newsletter to parents asking them to label student clothes, especially jackets, and also label lunch boxes with names. The last Friday of every month will be the last day that you can check the Lost and Found for items, then the following Tuesday, all items not yet claimed will be bagged and donated.
Lost and found will be placed on edge of stage
Palm trees need more light so we will decide where to place them.
We will wait to paint pots black.
We had a discussion about Mrs. Kelsey’s bulletin board contest idea. Waiting for clarification
Committee Goals:
*paint Berlin Wall – Mrs. Nassy will check on artwork to be done
*place a mural in garden area in honor of Mr. Matthews. We will get a piece of the one that is downtown when it is taken down.
* recycling and litter busters. We will add the kindergarten playground as another are to check for litter.
The playground needs another large trashcan. Was recommended that when the trashcan is full, any teacher or staff member can contact Mr. Jean to let him know it needs to be emptied.
Was recommended to include challenger in trash busters.
Trash busters will go to each classroom to do a skit and to talk about keeping playground clean
Suggestion made to make some 4th graders a part of trash busters since they are out last on playground for recess.
Recommended to possibly include playground cleanliness in PBIS.
No Change for Field Trips
All Doors Should Remain LOCKED at ALL Times
Anyone picking up small groups of students or who has a master key should ensure that when exiting the classroom the door is locked.
