Emmanuel Catholic College
College Newsletter - Term One Week 3 - 16 February 2018
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Parents, Students and College Community,
This week, the College began its Lenten preparation with our Whole School Ash Wednesday Liturgy. Ash Wednesday is a significant date in the Church Liturgical calendar as it commences our preparation for Easter.
Lent lasts for forty days and it takes us to Easter. It is a time for prayer, sacrifice, penance, and good works as we prepare for the celebration of the risen Christ. This year the theme for Project Compassion is ‘For a Just Future.’ All members of the College community can express their ‘good works’ by contributing, through Project Compassion to this most worthy cause.
We have, except for Year 7, completed all of our Parent Information Evenings. At these events, I have highlighted to parents the importance of good homework practices for all students. The regular and successful completion of homework is an important component for students in their endeavours to achieve to their best academic ability.
Below I have summarised from Lee Canter’s publication, “Homework Without Tears” five tips, for parents, to enhance student’s completion of homework. These practical suggestions will assist with the development of good homework practice for students of all ages.
Homework Tip #1 - Set up a Study Area
The study area needs to be set up in an area that is free from distraction. It needs to be well lit, quiet and have all necessary supplies close at hand. The family also needs to respect the student completing homework by not distracting them or having the TV or radio on in the background.
Homework Tip #2 - Create a Homework Kit
Create a homework kit that has all the necessary supplies. A large pencil case that can house, a variety of pens, ruler, eraser, and any other materials that may be necessary to make a useful kit. Do not rely on the individual student to have any of the supplies, however, it is not practicable to have expensive items such as graphics calculators in the kit. A spare pack of file paper is also suggested. Ensure that the student is aware of where the homework kit is housed and that the supplies are replaced as required.
Homework Tip #3 - Create a Homework Schedule
Homework, like all activities, needs to be scheduled into a student’s daily routine. At the beginning of each Term, sit down with your son/daughter and create a schedule that suits their individual needs. Ensure that the time allowance is consistent with what is suggested in the student’s Diary.
Tip #4 - Encourage the Student to Work Independently
Homework, aside from complementing the learned work from school, teaches the student responsibility. Through homework, issues such as time management, completion of tasks and following directions are learned. These are important skills for students, of all ages, to develop.
Homework Tip #5 - Motivate With Praise
Everyone, regardless of age, responds to praise. Keep a keen interest in the student’s work and praise them regularly. Praise from family members and others who are respected by the student is a highly effective means of motivation.
Tonight, I am looking forward to joining our Year 7 students, their families and key Year 7 staff for Mass and a welcome social gathering following Mass.
God Bless,
Mr Leo Di Gregorio - Principal

On Wednesday the whole College gathered to receive blessed ashes and observe the beginning of Lent. It was a very spiritually uplifting experience for those students and staff who accepted the discipline and renewal of Lent in this significant symbolic action. My congratulations to Miss Dempsey and her team for preparing such a beautiful service. I recently heard this description of Lent; like most simple things, rather good, I thought. When crossing a busy road, it is always best to STOP, LOOK AND LISTEN before crossing. The season of Lent (a time of prayer, self-denial and charity) is about taking time to STOP, LOOK AND LISTEN on our life journey.
I can't resist a joke to finish (some people probably think I should give up jokes for Lent!). One day Elio climbed to the top of a mountain to talk to God. Elio said "God, what is a million years to you?" God said "A minute." Then Elio asked "Well, what's a million dollars to you?" And God said "A penny." Then Elio asked God "Can I have a penny...?" And God said "Sure, in a minute!"

All of the morning times have been brought forward by 10 minutes, and the afternoon times have been brought forward by 5 minutes. An updated schedule for the service can be found using the link below. Please contact the College if you have any further queries regarding the bus services. ASH WEDNESDAY
On 14 February, the College community celebrated the beginning of the Lenten period with an Ash Wednesday liturgy in the SPACE. The liturgy focused on the meaning of the season of Lent, time of prayer, fasting and almsgiving in preparation for Easter. Ash Wednesday begins our forty day season of Lent that leads to Easter.
On Ash Wednesday, we come together like the people of the Old Testament to remind ourselves that we don’t always follow God’s ways and need to ask God for His mercy and forgiveness. Like God’s people in the time of the prophets, we wear ashes to show that we want to turn away from whatever keeps us from God, and to have a change of heart, so that we can live in the right relationship with God and each other.
The creation of the Ashes is a connection with the past as the palms from last year’s Palm Sunday have been burnt to produce these ashes. They remind us of the deadly things in our life. Having ashes on our foreheads is a sign that we want to turn away from these things and make a new start. As you come to receive your ashes I invite you to think about what you are going to do this Lent. During the distribution of the Ashes you will be asked to “turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel” this is the greatest time of repentance.
Each student was encouraged to spend some time reflecting about the purpose of Lent and how they can bring these ideas into their lives for the next 40 days. In order to assist in almsgiving, each Form will be provided with a Project Compassion Box. We ask that you give generously in this Lenten season.
Miss Miranda Dempsey - Assistant Deputy Principal 7 & 8/Faith Formation

To add to his prestigious award, Jhye Richardson serves as a role model to young sporting fans. The 21-year-old fast bowler, who will attend the Allan Border Medal in Melbourne tonight before travelling to South Africa with the Australian Test squad tomorrow, is a teetotaller who has challenged others to be who they want to be in the face of peer pressure. This year’s College Production is the highly anticipated Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum, which our students will be presenting to the community on 20 and 21 July. In this charming and family friendly musical, Dorothy and her dog Toto are caught in a tornado's path as it rips through their home in Kansas, and are whisked to the magical land of Oz. Here she meets some memorable friends and foes on her journey to find the Wizard of Oz, whom everyone says can help her return home and possibly grant her new friends, Scarecrow, Tinman and Lion, their dream of getting a brain, a heart and some courage.
This enchanting musical shows the importance of loyalty, friendship, bravery and persistence, whilst giving the all-important message: there’s no place like home. It is a wonderful and fitting musical production for our students at Emmanuel to get involved in, and an exciting opportunity to display the amazing talent we have here at Emmanuel. Watch this space for ticketing information, coming in Term Two!
