Elementary Office Update -8/14/2020
Greetings NC Elementary Families!
I hope this email finds you doing well and enjoying the last few weeks of summer. I have had the opportunity to speak with many of you about the upcoming school year. Most of these conversations have ended with us agreeing that this is a hard situation and that as parents - you know your child best. You therefore know what instructional option will best meet your family's needs for the fall. We are here to support you and thank you for continuing to partner with us in your child's education. Some families are still unsure about their decision for the fall, so I have included both families who have opted for our in person instructional model, as well as those who selected full virtual. The majority of our future updates will be separate for the two instructional models. Reminder that we are asking families to please make an instructional option decision by the 26th for the first semester. Those selecting to not send their child in person, are asked to make a semester commitment to the full virtual learning option.
Please do not hesitate to call with any questions you may have. My goal is to ensure all families feel empowered in the decision making process by providing as much information as I can.
The video posted below contains a longer explanation of this year's open house for our students enrolled in the IN PERSON learning model. Full virtual families, be on the lookout for an email next week about a virtual orientation and device pickup time.
Open House will take place on Tuesday, August 25th. Families will sign up for a time slot so they are the only family in their child's classroom at that time. Our largest class is 12 children, so there should be plenty of openings. Click HERE for the open house sign up link. Everyone coming into the building will have their temperature taken at the door and will need to have a face covering on (if medically able). Those who would prefer to not attend will have the option of a "virtual open house" where you can watch a video welcome from your child's teacher and can bring supplies on the 1st day. The videos will be sent to all families on the 25th. You can find your child's teacher listed in Skyward - if you checked earlier in the summer please look again as we have made some shifts.
Some common Questions and Answers can be found below as well. Please don't hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns.

Common Questions and Answers
Answer: Unfortunately for this school year we are asking that only essential visitors enter the building. Families who are dropping off their child will pull through the pickup lane, beginning at 7:50. We ask that your children remain in the vehicle until our staff come to take their temperature. The exception to this rule will be for our 4k families. These families may walk their child into the building on the first day of school. A separate email will be sent to 4k families outlining this process.
Questions: How will bus notes work this year?
Answer: To be able to properly contact trace, we will need to have assigned seats this year on the school bus. In years prior, frequent changes to go home with friends or to other locations was allowable. With the need for assigned seats, frequent changes will be difficult. We ask that students ride the bus to the residence(s) or childcare provider. Your efforts in helping with consistency on our routes is greatly appreciated.
Question: Are the four masks on the supply list going to stay at school?
Answer: No, we ask that children come to school each day with a mask on and have a backup mask in their backpack. The purpose of having four is to ensure your child has enough clean mask for each school day. If your family is unable to obtain face coverings, the school can provide them.
Question: Are they having recess and gym still?
Answer: Yes! Research overwhelmingly supports that time outdoors is important to both the social emotional and learning needs of students. Our recesses will be separated by grade level. Classroom cohorts will take turns using the different zones. Mrs. Davidson has some fun activities planned that allow us to play safely in PE!
Question: Will students be sitting in their desk all day?
Answer: No. While students will be having lunch in their rooms and some of their specials, our teachers know that students need movement. Teachers will be utilizing a variety of energizers and movement breaks throughout the day.
Question: Can I send homemade birthday treats?
Answer: In an abundance of caution, we are restricting treats shared with the class to prepackaged, store bought items. There will also be the option of ordering through our kitchen. (more info to follow)
