Cougar Courier
Greetings from Dr. Garcia!
September 5, 2020
I write today’s newsletter with a heavy heart. Our community, one that I love deeply, has lost two children to gun violence in the past two weeks. Two young lives were taken tragically, and our community is reeling from the loss of yet another innocent life. As an educator, I’ve lost many children to gun violence, and the pain and frustration can be difficult to temper. However, I hope we use this tragedy as a call to action and an opportunity for our community to come together, to bring healing and to end gun violence.
Healing also needs to occur in our own school community. Equity, diversity and inclusion are at the heart of my work as an educator and this week only deepened my commitment to this important work. Our mission at Clay International Academy is to cultivate open-mindedness and to help our scholars to be globally-minded citizens. Our mission extends not only to how we want our scholars to approach the world, but also to how we expect our teachers and staff members to approach the world. As we reflect on where we are in time and place, we will focus on creating equitable, inclusive and empowering experiences for all of our scholars.
This week we are proud to share the 2019-2020 Cougar Cast Award Show. For those families who are new to CIA, the Cougar Cast creates shows and videos about school-related topics. Mr. Gish and and his Cougar Cast team are extremely talented and showcase the best of CIA. We hope you enjoy the show!
Lastly, our IB learner attribute that is being highlighted in September is open-minded. IB defines being open-minded as: They understand and appreciate their own cultures and personal histories, and are open to the perspectives, values and traditions of other individuals and communities. They are accustomed to seeking and evaluating a range of points of view, and are willing to grow from the experience.
I hope you have a great Holiday weekend, and we will see you on Tuesday!
Blessings,
Dr. Garcia

Connecting Cougars
The Clay International Academy (CIA) Parent Teacher Student Organization (PTSO) is trying to help build community and help parents/guardians and scholars connect while we are apart. If you would like to connect with other families and students at CIA, please share your contact information in the form linked below. By sharing contact information we want to help facilitate students getting to know each other, as well as for parents to share information, since we don't have a lot of opportunities to meet in person. Please also visit our CIA PTSO Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/clayptsc/. You can also email us at clayacademyPTSO@gmail.com.
