Message From Principal Engdall
Greetings Shaw Community,
Maria Montessori believed strongly in “thanks-giving.” Giving thanks for prior events, systems and people is woven through the Montessori curriculum.
"No object must be made use of without the thought that some unknown human produced it….their effort and their sacrifice for us must always be present in our minds.
—The Child, Society, and the World
Gratitude and thanks-giving is a fundamental part of our pedagogy. It begins simply with Practical Life lessons of grace and courtesy in the primary classes. In elementary "Cosmic Education" is the goal: educating students about the size and scope of the universe; about how many inter-related parts contribute to our food, clothing, lifestyle, culture. The facts that all modern societies and economies rest on a web of relationships with everyone willing to do their part.
Gratitude and gracias both come from Latin gratia; the root being grace. Gratitude places us in a state of grace: peace, contentment, acceptance, and belonging. I am so grateful for our amazing school community and wish you peace and well-being through this season.
All the best,
Principal Engdall

Message From Laura Hildwein
Wishing your family a peaceful, restful and relaxing week off. Remember the attitude of gratitude! Recognize the small things people do for you. Say thank you to others. Let them know how their actions made you feel or how it helped you. Expressing gratitude has feel-good benefits for both the giver and the receiver.
Enjoy the break!

Lunch Bunch
Greetings!!
As the pandemic has dragged on we have found that the students are feeling isolated. Shaw is working on some solutions to help students connect with peers more often.
Wednesday’s through Friday’s, there will be a lunch bunch group. This will be a time for the kids to talk amongst themselves with an adult in the background. They can join for any amount of time during their grade level lunch bunch hour.
- Wednesday’s Ms. Laura will be hosting the lunch bunch for the Upper Elementary students 11:40am to 12:40pm.
- Thursday’s lunch bunch will be hosted by Ms. Patti for the Lower Elementary students 12:00pm to 1:00pm.
- Friday’s Ms. Laura will host the Middle School students 11:30am to 12:30pm.
There will be no lunch bunch for primary students at this time as they get a significant amount of socialization in their classroom.
Lunch Bunch is optional and it is really just a space where kids can talk to each other about whatever is on their minds. We hope to continue this format for as long as school remains online.
We look forward to seeing your children!!
For more information:
patricia.karnes@phxschools.org
Your child can join on their designated day by going to google classrooms, hitting the plus sign in the top right corner and hitting join. You would then input the following class code: npsjlgu
