Graphic Novels and Playaways
Playaways are MP3 audio books which can be checked out by students in grades 2 (beginning mid year) through 5. This format is a fabulous way to help students enjoy a story that might be above where they are able to read independently right now, and also offers gains in fluency and vocabulary. Borrowing policies
- All students are given time each week at the end of the library instructional period to select and check out library materials (books, magazines, playaways) to borrow, read and enjoy at home and return to school on their next library day. The borrowing period is one week. Students may renew materials they have not completed reading but should still bring them into the library to be physically renewed to school each week. Certain highly popular items will have a renewal limit of 2 or 3 weeks, depending on the number of other students waiting for a given item.
- Students in grades 2-5 are permitted as many as 5 items each week. Students in grade 1 begin the school year borrowing 1 book, are allowed 2 books after Thanksgiving, and 3 books at the end of January. Students in grades 2 (beginning mid-year) through 5 are also allowed to borrow one playaway per week after receipt of a signed permission slip. The permission slip is required due to the much higher replacement cost of these materials as compared with a book.
- If a student has forgotten their library materials on library day, they are allowed to borrow one additional item that day as long as they do not already have 5 items at home. They may also place materials on hold for the next school day which can be checked out when they bring in their overdues. We try to remain flexible in enforcing the overdue policy since our goal is to get reading materials into students' hands. However, if there is a pattern of overdue materials, I will send an email reminder home so students can get assistance from parents/guardians in remembering to return their borrowed items. Many times, other students are waiting for materials so we ask all students to be conscientious of their borrowing. Thank you for supporting us in this area.
