Acids and Bases Project

By: Zach, Rayce

Definitions-

Acidic Solution-An acid is a substance that donates hydrogen ions. Because of this, when an acid is dissolved in water, the balance between hydrogen ions and hydroxide ions is shifted. Now there are more hydrogen ions than hydroxide ions in the solution. This kind of solution is acidic.

Basic Solution-An aqueous solution containing more OH-ions than H+ions. An aqueous solution with a pH greater than 7.

Neutral Solution-By definition, a neutral solution is a solution that has a pH of 7. It is neither acidic (pH<7) or basic (pH>7), but right in the middle, or neutral.

Ph scale

1-6 is Acid

7-14 is Base

Equipment

  • Liquid being tested

  • Measuring Cup

  • Pipette

  • Testing strips

  • ph level charts

Procedure

Procedure- (Aqueous solutions only)

1. Get the liquid you're testing and a fourth of a testing strip

2. Put 50 ml of the liquid being tested into a measuring cup

3. Using a pipette suck the liquid into the pipette and put 2 drops of the liquid onto the testing strip

4. Hold the testing strip next to the pH level chart and take a picture

5. Record results

6. Clean out measuring cup for next test and throw away used testing strip

Procedure- (Solids Only)

1. Get the solid you're testing and a fourth a testing strip

2. Put 100 ml of water into a measuring cup

3. Add a teaspoon full of the solid into the 100 ml of water

4. Stir the solution using a spoon until solid completely dissolved into aqueous solution

5.Using a pipette suck the liquid into the pipette and put 2 drops of the liquid onto the testing strip

6. Hold the testing strip next to the pH level chart and take a picture

7.Record results

8. Clean out measuring cup for next test and throw away used testing strip
