The HRS Leader
Region 9 High Reliability Schools-December 2019
That's a wrap...almost!
Leading a High Reliability School
The whole process of implementing the HRS framework can be defined by the four steps you'll find on page 33 of this resource.
1. Create lagging indicators and establish criteria for success.
2. Collect data on school status regarding lagging indicators.
3. If the school hasn't met lagging indicator minimum requirements, refocus on actions inherent in associated leading indicators.
4. Continually collect data on lagging indicators and respond accordingly.
The work of HRS is never done; it is an ongoing process.
Level 1: Safe, Collaborative and Supportive Culture
Lagging indicators: One idea is to have digital shared folders that teams use to hold their work for the year. Administrators should monitor these documents and celebrate examples of outstanding practice, including common assessments created by teams and the use of data walls.
Quick data idea: Teams take turns reporting in a very short (30 seconds to a minute) amount of time on the collaborative work they are doing at staff meetings.
Level 2: Effective Teaching in Every Classroom
Lagging indicators: A clear vision of instruction can be found in an instructional model, which is a broad picture of instructional effectiveness. However, many schools choose to also include an "instructional snapshot" in the form of a "should see/might see/will never see" document. Having teachers collect personal artifacts for the use of the elements in the school's instructional model is one way to demonstrate this critical commitment (and it ties in well with T-TESS).
Quick data idea: Student focus groups (or surveys) asking students what instructional activities teachers are using in different classes. For example, students might be asked, "What kinds of activities have you teachers used in class to help you learn?" Specific teachers' names do not need to be used.
Level 3: Guaranteed and Viable Curriculum
Lagging indicators: Written goals for overall performance as well as closing the gaps would be considered important lagging indicators.
Quick data idea: Ask teachers "What are the school's achievement goals related to your content?"
