We have the Right Mental Attitude
News from our 5th Grade
5th graders are enjoying the novel "Because of Mr. Terupt". We are using reading strategies called Notice & Note Signposts to help us get a better understanding of this wonderful story. Some of us enjoy reading with a partner and some of us enjoy listening to the story (See pictures below). Many of the 5th graders have already met all three parts of their reading goal!
Science
Students in 5th-grade science just finished up a unit on ecosystems, where they learned about the interactions between producers and consumers. They also learned about the symbiotic relationships within ecosystems, which means organisms depending upon one another for support and survival in nature. Next week, students will begin a unit on light and they will be able to describe the properties of light (e.g. reflection, refraction, transmission of light through mediums, and why we see the colors that we do).
Social Studies
Students in 5th-grade social studies have finished a series of mini-lessons on latitude/longitude (e.g. using coordinates to locate cities within the United States), locations of the four major oceans and seven continents and timelines. Today, students were introduced to the Mayan civilization, which primarily was located in what we call Mexico today. Throughout this unit, students will learn and discuss the effects the Mayan civilization had on Mexican culture today (e.g. farming practices and goods, religion, and the advancements of mathematics and astronomy to create a calendar that is the basis of our calendar today).
Math
5th graders have been busy working with decimals this first quarter of the school year. They now have a better understanding of our base ten number system and place value than ever before and how decimals fit into it. The fifth grade year of math is more about modeling math than learning formal algorithms (though we do some of that, too). We've been using hundredths grids and number lines to divide with decimals just this week. 5th graders should be able to write decimals in words, expanded form, and as a fraction. They should know how to add and subtract decimals. They should be able to use place value to justify the placement of the decimal point when they multiply or divide. Have your child bring home their binder at least once a week and share with you all they are doing in math class.
Computers
Fifth graders in Mrs. Oney’s computer classes started off the school year by becoming a member of Google Classroom. Assignments are posted in Google Classroom for students to access on a daily basis. Students have been practicing their keyboarding skills using a black cover-up and Typing Quest, an online keyboarding program. Currently, students are using Google Docs and Google Drawings (pictured below) to become familiar with the formatting tools on the ribbon as they edit their work. In the next two weeks, students will register their Progressbook ID in order to access their grades and move onto Google Slides.
Mohican Update
Today Mohican Outdoor School registration form (front and back) was due. This form needs to be turned in ASAP for those of you who forgot. If you are unsure because of the money, please turn in the form and know that we can help defray the cost. Remember: The cost for MOS is $60 per student. If writing a check, make it out to South Central School. The packed lunch form is due NO LATER than Friday, Oct. 12th to ensure Mrs. Wilhelm has plenty of time to order what she needs.
