Dear Woodin Families,
November is one of my favorite times of the year! I absolutely love the fall colors, and appreciate the beautiful trees around us. This time of year I am also in awe of how much learning has happened at Woodin thus far. It is exciting that we are well into the school year and are coming to the end of the first quarter. So much to celebrate.
I know many of you are excited for conferences coming up next week. This is one of the most important milestones of a school year because parents and teachers have time to discuss a student's hopes, goals, and progress thus far. This is an opportunity for you and the teacher to focus just on your child. These conference times are great opportunities for some face-to-face dialogue between you and your child’s teacher, discussing goals, growth, and also some targeted areas for improvement. These conference times go extremely fast, so if you have further questions following these conferences, I encourage you to reach out to your child’s teacher. At Woodin, we value our open communication as together, we will continue to positively impact the learning of our children.
There are a few ways you can make the most of this opportunity:
· Parents have so much to share with teachers. You know if your child looks forward to school. You know if your child is doing homework at night. You know if there are silent worries about friendships or test anxiety. You know if your child is reading for pleasure. I hope that you can share these insights with your child's teacher.
· Teachers have so much to share with parents. They get to see how your child relates with others in a classroom. They see how your child performs academically in a variety of subject areas. They know whether your child is willing to take intellectual risks in the classroom. They know your child's reading level. They know whether your child is making friends in their class.
With a bit of preparation, we can help each other know each and every child a little bit better. If you have not scheduled a conference, please contact your child's teacher or our office, and we will make an appointment for you. In order to make your conference a productive one, here are some questions you might want to ask and some information you might consider sharing with the teacher.
You might want to ask the teacher:
· Does my child seem happy in school?
· Does my child participate in classroom activities?
· What are my child’s strengths and weaknesses?
· How does my child get along with classmates?
· Is my child working up to his/her ability? Where could he/she use improvement?
· What can we do at home to support what you are doing in the classroom?
You might want to tell the teacher:
· Which school activities your child talks about at home.
· What responsibilities your child handles at home.
· If anything has happened lately at home that might affect your child's performance at school.
· Which classmates your child sees at home.
· What are some of your child's favorite activities outside of school.
· What your child's strengths and areas of growth.
I am so thankful we have the opportunity to come together as we all work toward one of the most important tasks in the world . . .helping young people become the best people they can be. Thanks for your wonderful support. I am sending my wishes your way for an informative, enlightening and satisfying conference.
Fondly,
Dawn Bowers

Title Meeting and Family Partnership Survey
It was great to see many of you at the Annual Family Title Meeting on Tuesday night. As was discussed, at Woodin we believe developing a partnership with families is an essential component of student success. If you have not done so already, please take a few minutes to complete the Family Partnership Survey. Staff will use the data gathered to plan opportunities for partnership this year.
Math Challenge #5
Available November 22nd, at 3:00pm. Due Thursday, December 2nd.
Winners, randomly drawn from qualified entries (students that correctly answer the proper amount of questions for their grade level), will receive a Pull Back Racer.
Math Challenge program is a free, school-wide math enrichment program for elementary students consisting of series of challenging and interesting math problems provided to each school. Family and friends are encouraged to work together on the challenge. This is meant to be a fun, extracurricular math, not a chore or extra homework.
Please correctly solve the proper number of math problems for your grade for your chance to win the prize.
Teachers receive copies of the math challenge in their school mailbox for students in their class that are interested in completing the challenge. There are also printouts available in the PTA section of the main office, or you can print online at:
