BLACK HISTORY SPOTLIGHT
Carter G. Woodson
Carter G. Woodson (1875-1950) was a pioneering African American historian, author, and educator often referred to as the "Father of Black History." Born to formerly enslaved parents, Woodson dedicated his life to rectifying the historical neglect of African American contributions and achievements. In 1926, he initiated the establishment of "Negro History Week," which later evolved into Black History Month. Woodson's groundbreaking work includes the seminal book "The Mis-Education of the Negro," where he critiqued the biased and distorted portrayal of African Americans in mainstream education. Through his tireless efforts, Woodson played a crucial role in elevating the awareness and appreciation of African American history, ensuring that it received the recognition and respect it deserved. His legacy continues to inspire scholars, educators, and activists committed to promoting a more inclusive and accurate understanding of history.
