A Message from the Administration
“Don’t Talk to Me in That Tone of Voice”
John Terko, Principal, Allen Brook School
A paraeducator in our Early Ed program shared a chapter from Positive Discipline for Preschoolers (Nelson, Erwin & Duffy, 2007) with me called “Don’t Talk to Me in That Tone of Voice”. The information below is from the section, “What about anger? Dealing with difficult feelings”. I believe it can be applicable to many age groups.
“Like adults, children feel angry and frustrated from time to time. After all, there is so much that a young child cannot understand or do. Unfortunately, young children do not yet have the skills or maturity to express anger and frustration in ways that are acceptable to adults, which is why angry children are usually viewed as misbehaving children. Adults and children alike need to find acceptable, positive ways of dealing with feelings, even difficult ones.”
“When you become angry or extremely emotional, an interesting thing happens in your brain. The prefrontal cortex - the part responsible for emotional regulation, impulse control, and good judgement - essentially “disconnects,” leaving you with physical sensations and feelings. It is impossible to solve problems effectively without your prefrontal cortex, which is why it is so important to take a positive time-out to cool off before attempting to deal with problems. When a child becomes angry, adults call it a “tantrum.” Offering a hug or a positive time out is a helpful first step. Sometimes it is most helpful to simply allow a child to feel angry until the anger dissipates. Later you can follow up with curiosity questions to help your child understand their feelings and figure out solutions. After they have calmed down, you can teach your child to notice why they become angry. You can also help them recognize that anger is a deeply physical emotion and help them develop ways to cope.”
“Here are a few ways to recognize and manage feelings:
Invite the child to draw a picture of how the emotion feels. Does it have color or sound?
Ask the child to talk through rather than act out what they are feeling. “Sounds like you might be feeling hurt or want to get even?” “ Are you having a hard time holding the anger inside?”
Keep a feelings face chart handy and refer to it with your child, asking, “Does one of these faces show how you feel?”
Teach a slow breathing technique.
Use books and pictures to initiate discussions about anger and other emotions.
Let your child have the last word. Have faith in your child; let the feelings run their course and when they are calm, focus on teaching skills so they can look for solutions to their problems.
By practicing active listening, taking time to understand, and using some of the above ideas, adults can also help children deal honestly with jealousy, fear, sadness, and all of the other emotions that are part of human existence.“

Flu Activity in School
We wanted to reach out to let you know that we are starting to see flu activity here at Williston Schools, consistent with what is being reported across our state and the country. While the number of confirmed influenza cases in our buildings is still relatively low, we wanted to share this important information to help keep your child and our community healthy.
In an effort to reduce the spread of illness, we ask that you keep your sick child home until they are healthy (fever-free x 24 hours without medicine), reinforce the importance of covering coughs and sneezes with an elbow or tissue, and encourage your child to wash hands often and well. At school, we are reinforcing good hand and cough hygiene and cleaning in work spaces.
Please let the Health Office know if your child is sick with flu-like illness or if he or she has been diagnosed with influenza. If you have any questions, we encourage you to call your child's pediatrician or refer to the resources we've shared below.
Be well, Maria, Carol and Sylvia
How do I know...Is it a cold or the flu?
