THE VIKING
Hinesburg Community School - November 8, 2019
The Principal's Corner
Dear Families
Did you know that there are programs in our community to help address food insecurity in Hinesburg including the Hinesburg Community Resource Center Food Shelf and the Little Free Pantry, but there are kids at Hinesburg Community School who need additional help.
In partnership with HCRC, Partners in Education (P.I.E.) along with HCS administration and staff have joined with Hinesburg Kinney Drugs to have a "Snack Drive." Food items collected through the Snack Drive will be used to create "snack bags" that will be sent home with students. Our hope is that this will help assure there is a food source on weekends and vacation weeks for kids facing food insecurity at home.
Look for the RED BOX at Kinney Drugs and in the HCS Lobby to drop off non-perishable snack donations.
SNACK IDEAS (*individual serving size packs please*):
Granola Bars
Nutri Grain Bars
Peanut Butter Cracker Sandwiches
Trail Mix
Meat Sticks
Clif Kid bars (Zbars very popular)
Fig Bars
Applesauce
Goldfish Crackers
We encourage community members to support this cause! A big THANK YOU to HINESBURG KINNEY DRUGS for supporting the program AND everyone that has already dropped off donations...a large moving size box was already collected and brought to HCS this week!
Warmly,
Suzan & John

SAP News
Recent and concerning headlines about vaping have many adults wondering how we can help prevent youth from ever starting to use e-cigarettes.
"Young people who believe e-cigarettes cause no harm are more likely to use e-cigarettes than those who believe e-cigarettes cause a lot of harm. Youth tobacco use in any form, including e-cigarettes, is unsafe. A 2016 national survey showed that about 10% of U.S. youth believe e-cigarettes cause no harm, 62% believe they cause little or some harm, and 28% believe they cause a lot of harm when they are used some days but not every day." Here is a useful resource from the U.S. Surgeon General and the Center for Disease Control with more information about e-cigs and how to prevent youth use.
