Sneak Peek
Miss Roberts * Stoy School * June 6 and June 13, 2016
Thank you
I would like to recognize and thank two room parents, Mrs. Dybus and Mrs. Mrs. Weller for everything they did to help 2R! Their hard work, creativity and organization were wonderful! You are truly appreciated! I would also like to thank all of you who made yourselves available to join us on our field trips. I hope you enjoyed spending a day with 2nd Grade.
I want to thank each of you for your overwhelming support this year. I have loved every day of teaching and getting to know your children! I feel so fortunate to come to a place like Stoy School, where I get to do what I love every day with such amazing children, teachers, staff and parents. Our 2R family has grown so much, and I am so very proud of our students. This year has been a great learning adventure!
The students have accomplished so much and are ready for Third Grade. Please know that I will be close by next year and I am available for your children and you, if you ever need anything.
Thank you so much for sharing your children with me this year. Have a wonderful summer!
Literacy
This week, we will find out how astronauts explore new places in the informational text Working in Space. We’ll ponder outer space further when we read, “Space Poems.” The children will also explore the question, “What can you learn from headings and captions?”
Target Vocabulary: astronomy, force, orbit, repair, explored, future, space, float
Phonics Skills: words with vowel diphthongs ow (cow), ou (pound)
Vocabulary Strategy: classify/categorize
Comprehension Skill: Text and graphic features - tell how words go with photos
Comprehension Strategy: Analyze/evaluate - tell how you feel about the text and why
During Writer’s Workshop this week, they will create Character I.D. cards to assist them in creating their plot. Using storyboards, the stories will begin to take form and the students will learn how to write include dialogue into their story. Finally, the students will choose from a variety of layouts and complete their final copies of our original comics. We will share our work with our classmates.
Math
Social Studies
Money is an important part of our everyday lives and has a long history. The students will be introduced to the history of currency. The conversation will begin with the barter system. The students will learn that before money, people traded for things they needed. That lesson will conclude with more modern forms of payment such as credit cards and PayPal.
We will finish up Unit 6 learning how people make a difference by volunteering. Volunteers are people who help without being compelled, help out in times of need, and works without getting paid. Volunteers are important members of every community.
