From the Nest...

On behalf of our staff, we’d like to share a heartfelt thank you for the amazing Teacher Appreciation Week last week. We all felt like rock stars with the treats that were provided. While we all love our jobs, it makes it so much more enjoyable when we have community support and partnership!

Next Friday is the PTA Sponsored Spring Carnival from 6-8 pm at the school! We are so excited to have some fun with the Yellow Springs families. Our teams are making themed gift baskets for a silent auction to benefit the PTA. There will be crafts, food, inflatables, games, a photo booth, and more! Please complete the linked flier so that the PTA has a head count.

As always, we thank you for your continued support and partnership in our educational program.

Warm regards,

Mrs. Hannah Feldman and Dr. Kathy Swire

Feasibility Study

FCPS is embarking on a feasibility study of Yellow Springs Elementary. We will be evaluating whether to renovate, renovate with an addition or replace the building on the same site or another nearby future school site, as well as considering traffic flow and construction phasing. Information about the project can be found on the project webpage at https://www.fcps.org/capital-program/yses-feasibility.

We want to hear from you! Students, staff, parents and community members are encouraged to send input to the project manager at holly.nelson@fcps.org.

Kindergarten Registration

Registration for Kindergarten is underway! If your child will be 5 by September 1st, you will want to register for Kindergarten.

We will have a Welcome to Kindergarten Gift Bag for any family that completes registration before May 27th!

Enrollment is now online. The required enrollment documentation outlined below may be easily uploaded as part of the online enrollment process. Parents who are not able to upload the required enrollment documentation may return those items via US mail or drop them off at Yellow Springs Elementary.

  • Department of Health and Mental Hygiene form 896 Immunization Certificate or other proof of immunizations (view the complete immunization schedule here), and

  • Documentation of a recent physical exam, recorded on the Maryland Schools Record of Physical Examination. If your child's last physical exam was more than 9 months prior to the start of school, you may wait to submit the form until this year's exam is completed.

  • Proof of date of birth (provide one of these: Birth certificate, physician's certificate, hospital certificate, baptismal or church certificate, parent's affidavit, or passport/visa)

  • Proof of residency (provide one of these: current property tax bill, current rental bill, current utility bill for water, gas, or electric)

  • Parent photo identification

Pre-K Registration

Applying for FCPS public prekindergarten program, regardless of the time of year, DOES NOT automatically guarantee enrollment. Every attempt is made to provide space for as many children as possible, but because of funding restrictions, spaces are limited. In order for your application to be considered, all appropriate information must be completed and accompanied by ALL required documentation. Incomplete applications will not be processed and may affect your child’s placement.

The FCPS Pre-Kindergarten program is a state-funded program for four-year olds who meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • Child must be four years old on or before September 1st of the current school year

  • Child must reside in Frederick County

  • Children whose families qualify up to 300% of the Federal Poverty Limit (new)

Please see this link for more information regarding Pre-K registration

MSDE Special Education Survey

The MSDE Special Education Parent Survey has opened for families of student with disabilities. The responses to the survey can build efforts to improve services and results for children and youth, kindergarten to age 21, and improve efforts to increase family involvement. See the attached flyer and the link to the Maryland Special Education Parental Involvement Survey, open March 21 - May 27, 2022.

Your Child’s Sick? Here’s What to Do!

Please keep your child home if they are ill and email yses.attendance@fcps.org to let the school know that your child is unwell. We ask that you keep your child home for 24 hours after the symptom(s) and, if needed, get them tested for COVID-19.

We thank you for your cooperation in keeping all our students healthy and present for instruction!

Volunteering in School

We are welcoming volunteers this year! In order to volunteer, you must complete the online Volunteer Training. If you plan to come into the building for any event, please make sure you have completed this training well in advance so that you can be processed in our system. Due to our COVID-19 protocols, visitors to the school are not permitted this year.

Mental Health Awareness Spotlight

For those who have or know children who are exhibiting signs of worry and anxiety, which can sometimes increase during times of transition (such as the end of the school year), you might find the following resource helpful: What To Do (and Not Do) When Children Are Anxious.

Thank you to Brook Hill Church, Yellow Springs Lions Club and St. Katherines for providing the food for the “power packs” that go home on Fridays to many of our families.

Notes from the PTA

Family Fun Night

The Yellow Springs PTA is excited to invite students and their families to Family Fun Night on Friday, May 20 from 6-8pm (rain date Friday, June 3). We request that families RSVP by Friday, May 13 by filling out the bottom portion and returning it to school. We only need 1 form per family.

This is an outdoor event and seating will be limited. We are suggesting that families bring picnic blankets and foldable chairs if you would prefer to sit an enjoy the evening.

Please see the flier below for more information!

Notes from the Health Room

We recommend students carry a change of clothes in their backpack. Clothes can be helpful in instances of food spills and playground mishaps (mud or injury) as well as bathroom accidents. It is also a good idea to periodically check what clothes they have to make sure the clothing still fits your child and is appropriate for the temperatures outside. The health room has a limited supply of clothing that can be loaned to a student when necessary. If your child comes home in clothing from the health room, please wash the clothing and return to school so it is available for the next student in need.
