TUBMAN TRIBUNE
October 3, 2022
Message from Mr. Greer
As we finish September I have been reflecting on my time here at Harriet Tubman MS. I am encouraged by all of the support for HTMS and the collaboration from students and families. Our students and kids are who we think they are. They're bright, energetic, funny, caring and speak to wanting to be successful here at school and beyond.
I appreciate all of your support during both the more light hearted conversations as well as the conversations that enable us to grow together. I also enjoyed our time together when about 250 people were able to show up for Back to School Night. If you weren't able to attend, we are sharing the presentation in this newsletter. We have also started to reflect on the community voice we've begun to gather around school-wide systems and we will be asking everyone to get together again soon as we talk about the Center for Black Student Excellence and the relocation project.
Thank you for your continued support of your students, our staff and this community as a whole and I am looking forward to continuing to work together to grow Harriet Tubman MS into the vision we all have for it.

Mid-Term Progress Reports
Since we are half way though our first quarter, we wanted to give you a little information on the mid-term of the first quarter. Progress grades will be posted in ParentVue after Wednesday, October 5 and mailed home Friday, October 7. You can access grade information through your ParentVue or Canvas account. We always recommend that you frequently access ParentVue and Canvas to get up to date attendance, teacher messages, assignment, and grade information on your student.
Progress report marks are not a final grade, but an update on your student's academic performance. The quarter ends November 3.
As always if you have questions on grades, please reach out to your student’s teacher and they can help clarify.
Reach out and let us know if you are have any questions or concerns. We are here to help.

Chess for Success
I would like to ask for your help in a very special opportunity for students at Harriet Tubman. Beginning Monday Oct. 10, 2022, Harriet Tubman will be offering a Chess Class to all students grades 6th – 8th. Classes will be on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:00-5:00. Martin Ashley, an experienced chess player, has graciously agreed to teach the class with the assistance of Chess for Success. It should be noted that as an educational tool Chess is more than a game. It can change the way students think. They learn to make better decisions, take risks, use analysis to make the right move and develop strategies and complex plans to accomplish goals. It's the one game where their success is not based on chance or circumstances but purely on their decision making. Doesn’t that match many of the goals we have for students academically.
Chess Classes will go from October to Spring Break. Chess club will be on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:00 to 5:00. Each person joining will get a brand new chess set and t-shirt if they continue to the end of chess club. Also, chess students get to compete in chess tournaments against other middle schools.
Even if you don't know anything about chess, you can sign up. We will teach you all you need to know to be good at this great game! Join the chess club by completing SEI Registration and SUN application forms.

Center for Black Student Excellence Night
Center for Black Student Excellence
In 2020, voters approved the creation of the Center for Black Student Excellence (CBSE) as part of a bond measure that would also pay for a modernized Jefferson High School, a critical institution to the Black community. Portland Public Schools, in partnership with our Black community, will lead a community effort that will inform the plan to develop the CBSE, ensuring associated programmatic and capital projects in lower Albina (including the relocation) work in coordination to reflect the goals of racial equity and social justice. The goal of the CBSE is to advance a culture of Black excellence; unify, and elevate the Black educational experience; and improve outcomes for Black students.
This year, district staff will partner with the HTMS community to facilitate a robust design and engagement process to ensure that this community has ample opportunities to vision together about what the Center for Black Excellence will become and how that connects to the future of Harriet Tubman Middle School in a new home. For the month of October, we'll facilitate student engagement during the school day and we have an opportunity for families. We hope you'll join us!
