A Principal's Perspective
I was listening to a radio program on the way to school one morning. The host was talking about how many words a day that we speak. He proposed that a person speaks an average of 10,000-20,000 words per day! Wow! On a side note, he also said that the average person reads one book per year! With that many words spoken a day, what an impactful opportunity that we have each and every day with our students and fellow colleagues!
The words that we speak along with our mindset make a powerful combination to shape our school culture. I read an article from Fast Company, The Norwegian Secret To Enjoying A Long Winter (https://www.fastcompany.com/3052970/the-norwegian-secret-to-enjoying-a-long-winter ). The quote, "It’s hard to have a positive wintertime mindset when we make small talk by being negative about the winter.” People in Norway have a positive mindset about the winter. They "view winter as something to be enjoyed, not something to be endured." They look for opportunities to think positively about winter such as having winter celebrations and festivals, enjoying the beauty of the season and creating words such as koselig which means coziness to frame the mind to look for positive aspects of winter.
As we begin the 2019 year and this spring semester, we anticipate the normal highs and lows of the year. How do we capitalize on our words that we speak and our positive mindset to create a school where our students want to be and a school where we all want to work?
Be innovative - Design the possibilities!
