Notes from our Intervention Coordinator-Vanessa Chavez
Hello Teachers,
This week I will Progress Monitor the 3rd and 5th grade students that meet with me during Literacy Academy. I will email results of the progress monitoring and share with you my recommendations for regrouping. If you have any question about the data, please let me know.
Reminders from our TSP Advisor-Juan Carrillo
Hello Malabar Teachers.
This week we kick off our School Experience Survey campaign. Last year our parent completion rate was only 38% so we have a lot of work to do. We will be campaigning outside at dismissal several times a week to promote the parent survey. We will also be rewarding the top 3 classes with the highest parent completion rates with a movie and popcorn celebration. (More info to come). Please share the parent survey links with your parents and we will do the same via connect ed messages. The deadline for parents is December 19th. Thank you and have a great week.

Welcome Back! I hope you had a restful Thanksgiving break and enjoyed family and friends. Thank you for all you do for our English Learners!
Many of you have completed START SMART 1.0 and are moving onto START SMART 2.0. This unit builds upon the Constructive Conversation Skills and Norms that have been previously taught in Start Smart 1.0 (Revised). This 25-lesson unit builds upon the students’ knowledge of the Constructive Conversation Skills and addresses both Part I and Part II of the CA ELD Standards. A Conversation Pattern that consists of paraphrasing, building-on and prompting, is introduced, and explicitly taught. The Constructive Conversation prompts align to the language and critical thinking demands of SBAC. Two cornerstone learning activities in this unit are the oral and written paragraph that support students in applying their knowledge of informational texts. The culminating activity integrates technology and provides students with an opportunity to practice their oral presentation skills. Formative assessment tools are used in most lessons to capture evidence of student progress in the ELD standards.
As always, let me know if you would like me to demo a lesson, co-teach, or plan with you.
2021-2022 SPSA Measurable Goal
By June 2022, English Learners scoring proficient (Overall Level 4) on ELPAC will increase from 7% to 30% as measured by the Summative ELPAC assessment.
STEAM Ahead with our Instructional Coach-Angela Muro
Hello colleagues,
Yay! We made it to Thanksgiving! I hope that you all had a wonderful break. It seems we were able to secure substitute teachers for our ½ day PDs on December 8-10. Let’s keep our fingers crossed. We will be putting out an agenda and schedule this week. Again, the goal is to provide you with time to look at the next Amplify Science unit and plan your IIS #2. Remember that one of Malabar’s STEAM Instructional Expectations is to:
Engage [students] in scientific inquiry by asking and answering questions to promote Science and Engineering Practices (SEPs).
As always, if you have any questions or need any support, please shoot me an email or come by Room 5.

Self Care Tip:
As festive days get closer and we look forward to delicious home cooked meals, keep in mind the importance of nourishing your body with healthy food. Create grocery lists that contain treating yourself to delicious guilty pleasures ie. Hot Coco, baked cookies while also planning for healthy nutrient rich foods.

Thanksgiving Update
Virtual Winter Program
Local School Leadership Council decided to conduct our Winter Program in a Virtual setting. We plan on recording your student performance and placing the recording on our website. Please begin to plan your performance. All recordings will be due on Friday, December 10th. We are in the process of purchasing the necessary equipment. More information will follow in the coming weeks.
Focus on Classroom Observations-Standard 3: Delivery of Instruction
As we visit classrooms, we will be focusing on the following two elements:
3b2. Discussion Techniques and Student Participation Techniques are used to ensure that all students share their thinking around challenging questionsEffective Practice: Teacher uses intentional, differentiated strategies to engage all students in discussion, attempting gradual release from teacher-directed to student initiated conversation. Students participate in intellectually challenging discussions.
3c1. Standards-Based Projects, Activities and Assignments Standards-aligned learning activities cognitively engage students in the lesson
Effective Practice: Instructional projects, activities and assignments are aligned to the instructional standards, require higher levels of thinking, are culturally relevant, and may include real-world application. Most students are cognitively engaged, constructing their own understanding and exploring content. The learning activities are differentiated, as necessary, to meet the learning needs of student subgroups.
Focus for Next Week
We will continue our focus on STEAM and room environment.
