WELCOME!

Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten is the start of an exciting adventure for your child. St. Luke is open to all children and are committed to embracing every student in a safe and welcoming environment. We believe that early years education plays a significant role in bringing out the lifelong learner in each child. Young minds possess a natural curiosity, a desire to explore and learn more about the world around them in fun and interactive ways. We nurture each child and model the love for learning, celebrate their unique spirit, and instill positive values that will stay with them for the rest of their lives, such as Social Development and Emotional Regulation. Our curriculum focuses on an integrated approach designed to establish a solid foundation for your child and build confidence in an open, loving environment.

Big picture
Popular belief is that school readiness is defined by a child’s ability to count, write and know their ABC – when in fact focusing on a child’s social and emotional development, self-regulation and learning dispositions will help prepare them for school. At this age children are all about expression, when children really start to form their own ideas about what they want to play and how they want to create. Every day in our prekindergarten classroom, your child will explore, create, play and socialize — all the skills needed for their big next step: kindergarten! For much of the day, kids create, play, pretend, and express themselves their way! This kind of independent play builds critical thinking skills, self-reliance, and confidence for life.

A TYPICAL DAY IN PRE-KINDERGARTEN

Group Time: The real start to our day begins when we come together as a group to welcome each other and talk briefly about the day's planned events. We will also do things like read a book out loud or sing a song!

Activity Centers: Activity centers are an important part of our classrooms, and usually involve small-group activities. Your child will do things like play with blocks, experiment with creative arts, engage in dramatic play, read, and do age-appropriate math or science activities. They’ll build lots of self-confidence by expressing themselves creatively through painting, drama, music, storytelling, and writing. We give them the tools they need to create and then watch them explore.

Morning Nutritional Snack: Each morning children will be given a nutritious snack as part of our Nutritional program at St. Luke. Nutritional foods include items such as fresh fruits and vegetables, milk, and grains.

Outdoor Play: It’s time to go outside! Mostly little ones play on their own, using their imaginations. Outdoor time is also a part of our daily themed activities.
Big picture

The philosophy of OUR Kindergarten program embraces the concept of developing the whole child in a faith filled environment. We believe that children learn best by being actively involved in their own learning through a variety of hands on activities. These activities are meaningful for the children, appropriate for each child’s developmental level and are designed to allow each child to progress at his or her own pace.We believe that self-esteem is the foundation upon which all-learning rests. If children feel safe, they can take risks, ask questions, make mistakes, and learn to trust and share their feelings. We believe that each child is unique and holds special talents and gifts.

“Kindergarten is a wonderful way for your child to discover what school is like and to have fun while learning new things. In this exciting new community, children’s natural curiosity and eagerness to learn are structured through organized activities and purposeful play. Your child will interact, imagine, experiment and explore to add to their knowledge, learn new skills and practise what they’ve learned.”
Alberta Education Kindergarten Overview

Early Literacy

A is for apple. Your child will begin to understand that letters have sounds and that together those sounds form words and carry meaning. They will have fun sharing their ideas and experiences, forming letters, printing their names and playing with the new words they learn.

Mathematics

Learning numbers and solving problems with patterns. Your child will represent and describe quantities of things up to 10. They will understand and create repeating patterns and compare objects based on their attributes. They will solve problems involving numbers, patterns and objects, and connect numbers to their everyday life.

Citizenship and Idenitity

I am unique and I belong! Your child will develop a strong sense of identity, self-esteem and belonging by exploring their environment and sharing stories. They will see themselves as unique and discover the connections they have with others.

Environment and Community Awareness

What do I see, smell and hear in my community? How do I shape the environment? Kindergarten children explore materials, build structures and use technology to explore, investigate and describe their world. They see similarities and differences and become aware of how one action can cause something else.

Personal and Social Responsibility

I know how to act and how to work and play with others. Kindergarten children develop ways to express their feelings positively and to show respect and care for others. Trying new things and taking risks give them confidence in their ability to learn so they take responsibility for completing activities.

Physical Skills and Well-Being

A healthy body is part of a healthy life. Your child will begin to develop a love for physical activity through movement, games and activities. They will use a variety of equipment and see that they have the power to make healthy food choices and play safely

Creative Expression

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder! Drama, art, music and dance give your child ways to express their ideas and feelings, to bring their imagination to life and to see their creativity in a variety of forms. Your child will respond to objects and art, explore music and dance, and develop confidence through drama.
