2nd Grade Newsletter

May 6, 2016

Thank you!

Thank you for the sweet notes and other goodies that your children brought in this week for Teacher Appreciation Week. The PTA also did a wonderful job making us feel special. It was a fabulous week!

Thank you to all the moms and other special women who came this morning. Our students were excited to treat you and share their writing with you. One thing is for sure... these students love their moms! We hope everyone has a special Mother's Day!

Lunch Charges

As of Monday, May 9th, all lunch charges (negative balances) need to be paid, and a student will no longer be able to charge (owe money) on their lunch. Please make sure your child has money on their account accordingly. You can continue to send in cash or checks to apply to their accounts through the last day of school.

Here's what we are working on...

Reading - We will be reviewing 2nd grade and previewing for 3rd grade!

Math - We will still be focusing on money, specifically word problems with money and change from a dollar. We will also begin to learn about the concept of multiplication with repeated addition and arrays.

Writing - We will learn about our famous Georgia site for Georgia Day. The students will be making a poster to present to the other second grade classes.

Social Studies - We begin to learn about national, state and local government.

Grammar - We will be reviewing alphabetical order.

Spelling/Word Study - We will be learning about the -oot and -ought word families. Our anchor words are scoot, root, fought, and thought.

The sight words are put, end, does, another, well, large, must, big, even, such. These will be tested on May 20th.

Virtual Author Visit

On Tuesday, May 10th students will have the opportunity to Skype with artist and author Mark Gonyea. Mark has written several books including: A Book About Color; A Book About Design; Another Book About Design; and The Spooky Book. Most students are familiar with A Book About Color from art class. Students will have an opportunity to see Mark Gonyea’s studio, hear about his inspirations, and learn about the process for creating books. There will be time during the presentation for students to ask him questions. We are very excited to bring this digital learning opportunity to our students. If you'd like to know more about this artist, visit his website at http://www.markgonyea.com/.

The video conference sessions will be held in the cafeteria at the following times:

(K/1) 8:20 - 8:50

(2/3) 9:00 - 9:45

(4/5) 10:05-10:50

Do you have t-shirts and sweaters you’d like to donate?

We are collecting t-shirts (all colors and sizes) to be used for art shirts and for next year's Art Show. Consider donating your outgrown or old sweaters to a future art project. You can drop off t-shirts and sweaters in Ms. Dorian’s classroom.
