Joseph Cook was Australia's 6th Prime Minister. It was 1819 when he became the Labor member for Hartley in the New South Wales parliament. He joined the first federal parliament in 1901 as a free trade member and despite being known as having no imagination, he held the federal seat of Parramatta for 20yrs.

Joseph Cook was a founding member of the Labor party in NSW, then he became a member of the National Fusion party which became the Liberal party. He was the main force behind the Defence Force Act of 1909 that introduced compulsory military service which meant all men over the age of 18 had to join the army, navy or air force if needed.
