Message From Principal Webb
Dear Longhorn families,
The weather is changing and we want to remind everyone to send coats, hats, and gloves when the weather is chilly. Please remind your student to check the lost and found as items are starting to pile up again.
If you need assistance getting any winter gear, please contact our SFA Caitlin Hauskins and check out the winter gear information in the newsletter below.
Be on the lookout as Parent-Teacher Conference Sign-up will be coming this week!
Remember to take time for yourself as this can be a stressful time of the year for many of us. If ever you have a concern or something great to celebrate I encourage you to reach out!
Have a wonderful weekend!
Mrs. Webb

Meet the 2nd grade team:
Meet Mrs. Dillard...
After a memorable year teaching online, Mrs. Dillard is thrilled to be back in the classroom with the kids and in the building with the Longfellow Staff! Mrs. Dillard has fond memories of her own second-grade teacher, Mrs. Leighty, and hopes to make the same positive lasting impression on her students. Mrs. Dillard cares about life lessons and positive attitudes; the children in her class know her mantras. She has read many of the same books every year and LOVES to see her students captivated by the power of a good story. When not at Longfellow, Mrs. Dillard can be found outside, reading a good book, or with her husband Seth, daughter Estie, and kitty George.
Meet Ms. Morgan…
Ms. Morgan graduated from Drake University and began her teaching career in Fort Dodge, Iowa in 1st grade. The following year an opportunity presented itself in West Des Moines, Iowa, where she completed her student teaching experience. She taught first grade at Clive Elementary for 11 years. In 2000, her family then moved to Iowa City where she interviewed and was offered a teaching position working in a multi-age classroom with 1st and 2nd graders at Longfellow Elementary. Her oldest son Jeremy began kindergarten at Longfellow Elementary and 2 years later Mikaela did too! Ms. Morgan moved to 2nd grade when Longfellow went to straight grades. She added 2 more members to her family in November of 2000, Cailyn and in December of 2002, Marcus. Professionally, Ms. Morgan successfully completed her National Board Certification in 2000 as an Early Childhood Generalist and her Masters degree in Educational Leadership in 2010 from Drake University. Ms. Morgan follows a long line of teachers in her family. Making a difference in a child’s life is a top priority. She recently moved her parents to Iowa City where they can be close to their grandkids. She loves working with children and seeing the light go on when they discover the magic of learning! Currently, outside of school she loves keeping up with Jeremy who is playing basketball professionally in Germany; Helping Mikaela prepare her own classroom as a new 3rd grade teacher at Arrowhead Elementary in Colorado; Cheering on Cailyn and the UNI women’s basketball team; and enjoying her newest adventures cheering on Marcus and the Iowa Baseball team! In her free time she enjoys knitting, reading a good book, and spending time with family.
Meet Mrs. Rarick...
My name is Mrs. Vicky Rarick. I have been teaching for just over 20 years, and I couldn't imagine doing anything else. I have taught K-12 throughout my career, mostly as a special education teacher. I started my teaching career in Minnesota, and am originally from Rochester. My husband, James, graduated from City High. We have two daughters, Kendra 11, and Reese is eight. This is my third year teaching second grade here at Longfellow. I really enjoy this age group. It is so rewarding to see the progress in reading fluency that students have at this grade level.
District vote
On November 2, 2021, the Iowa City Community School District will ask voters to consider the renewal of the Iowa Secure and Advanced Vision for Education Levy (SAVE) and the Physical Plant and Equipment Levy (PPEL). The no new money renewal of these levies allows the District to complete the promise of FMP 1.0 and to embark on Facilities Master Plan (FMP) 2.0 with no tax increase. This extension of SAVE and PPEL also provides funding for District-wide lifecycle projects that would otherwise pull vital teaching and learning dollars from the District’s general fund. This progress would come with no increase to the current tax rate.
Our District will hold two community information sessions on the extension of PPEL and SAVE. Superintendent Matt Degner will share details about the November 2, 2021 vote and answer questions from participants. The information sessions will be held virtually on the following dates:
- Tuesday, October 5 from 5-6:00 pm
(Zoom link: https://iowacityschools-org.zoom.us/j/92800531354) - Wednesday, October 20 from 5-6:00 pm
(Zoom link: https://iowacityschools-org.zoom.us/j/92800531354)
You can learn more about our District’s plan at www.IowaCitySchools.org/FMP2.0. We appreciate your engagement in this process and please vote on November 2, 2021. #ICCSDtogether

ATTENDANCE
Please remember the importance of your student arriving on time each day. School starts at 7:50 and the tardy bell rings at 7:55. If students arrive late they must enter through the front office door. After school students need to return home to check in before playing on equipment. The BASP program has access to the playground until 6:00 pm each day after school. Any student on the playground without supervision will be sent home.
An attendance reminder: students who have more than 5 tardies, or 8-10 absences will need to have a meeting at the school to see what supports we can put in place to support school attendance.

Longfellow Elementary stands with all people of color in the fight against racial injustice and inequality. We all deserve to be safe and secure. Longfellow Elementary, as part of the Iowa City Community School District, will not tolerate racism, hate, and other discriminatory acts. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. famously said that, “injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” We will work hard to not let today’s injustice stop us from creating a better tomorrow for our school community. Please know that even though it is summer, you can reach out anytime.
Below you will also find links to resources that are available for our staff and our community. Stay safe and take care. #ICCSDtogether
