News for our Families ~ September 2022
A Message from Mrs. Duquette
Greetings!
Week 1 at WES was a success! We are happy to see so many smiling faces ready to start the new school year. We cannot thank you enough for your continued support.
As we begin the new school year, I wanted to remind you of a few things:
Buses begin unloading at 8:20 each morning. Parent drop-off begins right after all buses are cleared. Please do not arrive at school before 8:15 as our buses need to have access to get through. *Anyone needing an earlier drop off should contact our Out of School TIme Director, Jennifer Chaves at jchaves@westportschools.org.
- Students are considered late if they arrive at school after 8:35 unless already waiting in the drop off line. We want to promote independence on the 1st day of school and beyond. Please help us to help your child become independent. When waiting to exit the vehicle, have your child gather all their belongings and be ready to exit the vehicle on the PASSENGER’S side.
Make sure that your child and their teacher know how they will get home each day. Any changes to regular dismissal plans should be emailed to wesoffice@westportschools.org or may you send in a written note to your child’s teacher.
Our school day ends at 2:40 then dismissal begins. If picking up your child through carpool, please do not arrive before 2:30 and make sure that your school-issued car tag is visible to our staff members on duty. You should remain in your car for safety and to help ease traffic flow. If you have not received a parent pick-up tag and your child will be a parent pick-up regularly, please fill out the google form:
Please be patient as we work to ensure that EVERY child gets on the right bus in the afternoon. Safety is our #1 priority and each day will get better.
Busing: We ask that you remind your child to follow safety procedures on the bus and be courteous to our drivers. Students should remain seated through the bus ride and follow all school rules. If an authorized adult or designee is not at the bus stop, the driver will bring the student back to the school and you will be notified to pick up your child.
All families should have access to the Westport Schools Parent Portal. Please view and confirm your Contact Information and Emergency Contacts by September 23rd. Any changes should be requested through the portal. The portal will also be used to send out Progress Reports and Report Cards each Trimester. See the link below. If you have any difficulty accessing the portal please contact fpacheco@westportschools.org
https://wcs.schoolbrains.com/comm/
If you would like to volunteer or chaperone this year, please know you must have fingerprints on file, as well as, a current CORI form. Forms will be available at the Open House. *Please be sure to bring your ID.
There is no cost for breakfast and lunch. It is free for all students. However, if your child would like MILK ONLY, they will be charged. Only students who would like breakfast are sent down to the cafeteria in the AM so please be sure to notify your child’s teacher if your child should attend breakfast.
It is typical for students to show signs of anxiety during the first weeks of school, so please allow them time to adjust to their new teachers, new school, and new friends. These adjustments are usually temporary, but should your child experience anxiety that lasts beyond the first few weeks, please contact our School Adjustment Counselors:
Grades 1 & 4: Anne Mueller at amueller@westportschools.org
Grades 2 & 3: Rebecca Kearney at rkearney@westportschools.org
Thank you in advance for your support. It's going to be an aWESome school year!
Technology Update
Student Footwear
Please understand that the necessity of wearing proper shoes is 100% instruction and safety-driven.
Running shoes, Basketball shoes, cross-training shoes, and tennis shoes are ideal in a physical education setting and for recess.
We recommend:
-Shoe fits the foot (not slipping out)
-Shoe has a back where the heel is not exposed
-Shoe has an appropriate bottom where running will not hurt the foot.
If your child is in need of new footwear, please email wesoffice@westportschools.org for assistance.
WES/MAC School Council
School Councils bring parents, school employees and the community together to share ideas regarding school climate, facilities, increasing student achievement, and community partnerships. Meetings will be virtual at 3:30 pm to accommodate schedules. If you are interested in being a part of the WES/Mac School Council, please email wesoffice@westportschools.org for consideration.
