MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL OPHUS
Dear Fairview Families,
It has been an exciting week at Fairview! We are so thankful to our wonderful PTO for bringing in the Rope Warrior assembly on Tuesday. Students learned about keeping active and staying fit. Many volunteers were called up to the front to perform some exciting jump rope tricks as well, and we were able to watch the presenter’s famous jump rope routine to close out the show. It was both educational and entertaining, and we have the PTO and all of you to thank! On Thursday morning, we had the treat of welcoming our incoming 2nd grade students from Westbrook School to Fairview for a special tour. They were all able to meet with a second grade teacher and buddy to learn all about Fairview. Then in the afternoon, our 5th graders visited Lincoln Middle School for a tour and a chance to explore all about their new school. These trips help make the transition from one school to the next smooth and enjoyable for our students. To close out the week today, we were able to watch our Lincoln Middle School Jazz Band and Show Choir perform. It was wonderful to see many former Fairview students on stage sharing their talents with us. Both shows were amazing and a testament to the effectiveness of our D57 music program. Special thanks to Mr. Acuña and Ms. Thomas for leading these two groups. Please take a moment to read the updates below to stay informed about all we have coming up in the weeks ahead. You can click this link to see this past week’s installment of the FES News from the Fairview Media Club. Have a wonderful weekend!
Sincerely,
Dan Ophus
Fairview Principal
Spring Assessments: Similar to the fall and winter, we will be gathering data from each of our students in the weeks ahead to help us measure progress and plan for future instruction. Students will be taking the MAP (measures of academic progress) assessment on Tuesday and Wednesday. Score reports will be sent home to parents at the end of the school year. Students will also be given a reading fluency benchmark assessment to measure reading rate, which has a strong correlation to comprehension as well as a math screening assessment to measure growth in grade level standards for math. All of this information is gathered to help us create instructional plans and make decisions about student support to help our students learn and grow. If you have any questions about these assessments, please reach out to your child’s teacher.
PTO Meeting: Our final PTO meeting of this school year is coming up on Monday, May 1st at 6:30 pm in the LRC. All are welcome to join us to learn more about all of the good work our PTO is doing to support Fairview! As this is our final meeting of the school year, I wanted to acknowledge this year’s amazing PTO leadership team. Many thanks to Nicole Dufkis and Jacki Kochanski (co-presidents), Audrey Canavino and Carrie Krupa (co-vice-presidents), Dianne Malara (treasurer), and Carolyn Schneider (secretary) for all of their outstanding work in support of our students this year. Thank you also to the many parent volunteers who have either led a committee or helped at an event this year. We are so lucky to have such an involved and supportive parent community. Thank you for your support!
Fairview TV: If you are ever looking for videos of some of the fun Fairview events including our 5th grade musical performances, cereal effect domino event, and more, you can go to the Fairview homepage and scroll down to the Fairview TV section. There are links to these videos for families to enjoy!
Parent Feedback for Next School Year: As we get closer to the end of the year, the Fairview staff will complete the sectioning process for next school year. This process consists of teachers carefully analyzing student needs and creating balanced class lists for the following school year. There are several factors that are considered when creating balanced class lists. Students are placed so that they have a cluster of other peers with them that learn at their same academic levels to ensure an appropriate peer group exists for small-group instruction. Teachers carefully consider the types of support that each student needs when generating balanced class lists as well. Once each grade level team has created class lists that are balanced and make sense from an instructional standpoint, I carefully analyze each list and assign a homeroom teacher. I may make a small number of changes to the teacher-created lists if needed. I’d like to invite you as parents to take a part in this process, as you know your child best. If you’d like to share your feelings about the learning environment that will best suit your child’s learning needs, please fill out the form found at this link. DO NOT SPECIFICALLY REQUEST TEACHERS BY NAME. Such requests will not be honored. Rather than stating the teacher you want, provide me with information about your son or daughter and how you feel they learn most effectively. I will read through every feedback form I receive carefully and take your input into account when making final teacher assignments. Please submit this form no later than Friday, May 5th. If you have more than one child who will attend Fairview next school year, please fill out the form separately for each child.
April Falcons Read - School Window Poetry Walk: To celebrate poetry month, the Fairview staff wanted to create a way for families to get out and enjoy the changing weather while being involved with our school. Continuing through the end of April, families are welcome to walk around the outside of our building to view the variety of poems we have posted and decorated by students on our exterior windows. Feel free to stop by Fairview with your family for this poetry window walk anytime after school or on the weekend. We hope you enjoy it!
Please contact Julie Manis (jmanis@d57.org) or Cindy Buell (cbuell@d57.org) if you need assistance with language translation of any of the flyers that appear in the newsletter.
