"We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope"
-Martin Luther King Jr.
As we observe and celebrate Dr. King's birthday this weekend, I find myself reflecting on his quote and how it resonates with us here in 2023. I have the privilege of walking the GMS hallways every day, and I see our wonderful and diverse student body collaborating on school work, engaging in community service and acts of kindness, and building friendships with one another. We had so many Kindness Award winners this week, that we had to host a gift card raffle ahead of schedule.
At the same time, our school community, like all other school communities, is a microcosm of the wider world and it is important to acknowledge that there are still a number of "finite disappointments" that we must acknowledge and work to make better. Our students live in a world where hatred and bias are still too frequently part of the broader discourse and it trickles down to them through various channels, most often social media related. We sometimes see evidence of our students treating one another very unkindly, often framing hurtful and offensive commentary as "jokes" that get at the identity of the target.
In the coming weeks, the staff at GMS will spend time training in the implementation of restorative justice practices. We want to be sure that we have the knowledge and the tools to help our young people to understand that their words and actions have real impact, and that intent matters. I hope that our young people will continue to model kindness and seek to continue to serve their community as we seek to strengthen peer-to-peer and student-teacher relationships. We want to make sure we give our kids every chance to realize that "infinite hope" of a more peaceful and just world as they prepare for their own adulthoods.
