A Message from the Superintendent

District 92 Families,

As we turn our attention to winter, I'd like to recognize where we are with "learning during a pandemic" in D92. We all look forward to a day when this is no longer a topic of conversation!

While we celebrate the return to full-day, in-person learning for students this year, we continue to have students who need to be excluded from in-person learning due to either having COVID, being a close contact, or having COVID symptoms. The guidelines for excluding students can be confusing and we strive for consistency, so we have created this document for parents when their child needs to be excluded from school.

We want each of our students in school every day. We all know that's where they learn best. We continue to balance having students receive in-person learning while ensuring we provide a safe learning environment for all. We will continue to follow the guidance provided to us by IDPH, the Will County Health Dept., and ISBE as we move forward.

Metrics from IDPH for COVID Mitigation Strategies: With the vaccination now available for children ages 5 and up, they will have the ability to be fully vaccinated in January 2022. With that on the horizon, I have been advocating for the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) and Illinois Department of Health (IDPH) for COVID metrics that enable us to adjust our mitigation strategies based on the actual COVID data in District 92. I recently spoke to ISBE about this and you can read my statement to ISBE here.

Obviously, we are all waiting to see what happens with the new omicron variant. Until we know the severity of the omicron variant, we plan to maintain our current mitigation strategies. In the meantime, I am asking that the health experts give us clear metrics for working toward a finish line in 2022.

As we continue to work through this pandemic, District 92 will continue to follow the guidance we are given from both IDPH and ISBE. The consistent message from healthcare experts is that vaccinations are the most important tool we have to overcome the COVID virus.

Winter Weather and eLearning: Beginning this school year, we will be using "eLearning" days instead of traditional "snow days" in the event of a school closure due to extreme winter weather or other reasons. The D92 e-Learning Plan has been developed in collaboration with union leadership to ensure a practical plan for teachers and was approved by the Board of Education in August 2021.

During an eLearning day, students learn remotely at home and the day counts as a school day. Using eLearning days provides continuity of learning because students and teachers continue moving through the curriculum without the interruption of a snow day. This also avoids adding days to the end of the school year.

Hopefully, we will not need to close school due to winter weather, but if we do, our eLearning plan will provide continuity of learning for our students.

Happy Holidays: The month of December can be a very hectic time of year. I encourage all of us to give the gift of our "presence" to those we love. Slowing down to be present in the moment can help us better appreciate each day.

Stay healthy and safe,

Tim Arnold, Ph.D.
