Ripon Cathedral School Update
Week ending Friday 6th January 2017
happy new year
We hope you all enjoyed a lovely break celebrating Christmas and the New Year. If you follow our facebook page, we trust you appreciated the daily nativity pictures reminding us of the Christmas story and the joy Year 2 brought us on the last day of term with their superb nativity performance.
It has been lovely to welcome everyone back for the new year and we are pleased that all the children (and staff!) have settled back into school so quickly.
With the help of the Parent Forum, we have made our own new year's resolution to start eating more healthily! Please see the item below which explains why we'd like children to stop bringing in sweets or lollies for the class on their birthday. We hope you'll all agree that with small steps we help keep our children healthy.
Staffing update
We are delighted that Jade Haslam has joined our staff team, replacing Mr Housley as teaching assistant. She will be working primarily in the Year 4 classroom where all the children have already warmly welcomed her.

New Year resolution - no more sweet treats for birthdays
One of our school development priorities is to improve the health and wellbeing of our children. When our Parent Forum got together in the Autumn term, we had a positive conversation about healthy eating in school, including school meals, packed lunches and other treats brought into school (you can read a summary of the meeting here). The class representatives all agreed to a change in policy of having fewer sweets in school. This includes stopping the custom of bringing in sweets, cakes or a lolly for every member of the class on your child's birthday. We hope this will support parents who have the cost or stress of remembering to buy sweets, or having to tell your child why you are not doing so!
You may be aware that the amount of sugar consumed by children at breakfast time has been in the news this week.
