Weekly RAM Newsletter
From the desk of Principal Mills - March 5th, 2023
Happy Sunday Ram Families!
I hope this newsletter finds you all well and warming up after a pretty cold and windy week! Just as our furry-friend in New Hampshire predicted on February 2nd, it looks like we are in for more of the same in what has become a winter for the ages!
We have a busy few weeks coming up as we jump into March! This Wednesday we have our usual late start, followed by minimum days this Thursday and Friday and also next Monday and Tuesday for Parent/Student/Teacher conferences. Please make sure to check your email or the TPMS website for any updates, as well as follow the PTSA Instagram page @twinpeaksptsa and our Foundation Instagram page @twinpeaksfoundation.
Our PUSD Knowledge and Network Parent Ambassador Program is hosting an informational session with PUSD Special Education Directors and Program Specialists on school transitions and alternative pathways to graduation. This informational session is happening Monday, March 6th from 10-11:15am and can be attended live or via Zoom. Please see the flyer below and scan the QR code in order to sign-up and attend this session.
PHS counselors visited our 8th grade ELA classes this past Monday and Tuesday to begin the class selection process for 9th grade next year. Course Request Forms (CRFs) for PHS were distributed and the 4 year plan was reviewed with students. Students need to turn in their Course Request Form to their Language Arts teacher by Friday, March 24th and their course requests must be entered online by March 31st. Please encourage your student to keep their course request worksheet as they may not remember their choices in the fall.
We encourage all TPMS 8th grade families to attend the 8th Grade Family Night on Tuesday, March 14th at 5pm at PHS to learn about clubs, activities, and the wide array of elective and core courses available. Families will also have an opportunity to see the campus and meet some teachers. Please CLICK HERE for additional course request information and important dates for PHS and other PUSD high schools if your student plans to attend another school in the district.
The course selection process for current TPMS 6th and 7th graders will begin on Monday, March 20th. Current 6th and 7th graders will receive their CRFs in their Ram classes where counselors will be visiting to make sure they understand the signup process and schedule for next school year. In addition to the paper copy of the CRF, students will also need to signup for their classes in our online portal. Links to the signup portal and instructions on how to enroll in courses will be included on the CRF and on our TPMS website starting March 20th. CRF forms will be due on Thursday, March 30th to Ram teachers, and will also need to entered online by the end of the day on Friday, March 31st.
As a reminder, Online Continuing Student Registration will be open from March 1- March 31, 2023. Parents and Guardians should have received an email notification that the website is now open. Please remember that we must receive a completed digital packet for all returning students by March 31st. Please see the Online Registration section below for more information and links to complete the online registration process.
Finally this week, our Science Olympiad team spent this past Saturday at Miramar College competing in the San Diego Regional competition. According to their coaches, the students did an AMAZING job and competed in every event they entered. Our students even placed in two of the events they entered - great job Science Olympians!! Please enjoy a few pictures of our Science Olympiad team and their dedicated coaches below.

Middle School Redesign Update
Course Request Forms (CRFs) will be coming out in the next few weeks for students to select classes for next school year. One of the the things you will notice on the student CRFs for next school year are additional elective classes for your students to select from. As part of the PUSD middle school redesign, our faculty recently voted to pilot an 8 period schedule for next school year at Twin Peaks MS; this will provide students with 1 additional period each day to take an elective and/or support class without extending the school day beyond it's current start time of 8:30am and end time of 3:15pm. We plan to switch to trimesters to align our grading periods with Poway High School, and will also keep our odd/even rotating blocks periods. Many students and teachers were in favor of shortening our 100 minute block periods, so we will add a 4th block period to each day, reducing class periods to 75 minutes long.
We are excited about these changes and hope that it provides more elective options for all students, as well as opportunities for students to receive the additional academic help and support they might need. Our teachers have stepped up to the challenge and are working on developing several new exciting elective options for students in the sciences, humanities and visual and performing arts. New elective offerings could be trimester or year-long, and will differ at each grade level. As we pilot these new offerings and schedule this next school year, please make sure to share your concerns with our admin and counseling teams. The admin team contact information is LOCATED HERE and our TPMS counselor contact information is LOCATED HERE on our TPMS website.

What I Wish My Parents Knew 4/20/23
San Diego Elite Track Club
San Diego Elite is a member of the USATF (USA Track and Field) association and participates in local, regional and national events. San Diego Elite is “homebased” out of Steel Canyon High School, but has athletes from all over San Diego. Therefore, providing a training location such as Poway is a perfect opportunity to grow and expand the San Diego Elite team. San Diego Elite Track Club has a storied history, although known by other names and affiliated with other clubs in the past, Coach Ranti Harper has been an integral part of the youth track scene in San Diego and looks forward to bringing his enthusiasm and knowledge to Poway.
Trainings will primarily be held at Poway High School; however, trainings may take place at Lake Poway or another location depending on the particular workout. Training schedules will be sent out at least 1 week in advance (we are working on scheduling the entire year, but there are challenges due to high school sports having preference at Poway High School). The goal is to get in 1-3 team workouts per week with at least one of those being on the track. Meets are held on the weekends, generally Saturday, but some meets will run on Saturday and Sunday.
For more information, please feel free to email questions to: jordanbuswell@hotmail.com or call Jordan Buswell at (760) 594-1642, the San Diego Elite representative.
