Staff Weekly Update
"Leading with Heart" 3-10-19
Good Things
- Many thanks to Nicole Kutsick and all that helped her with Move-Up Day. It was a great gathering of the two buildings. I truly believed the 5th-grade students along with Mrs. Snead's class made out incoming 3rd graders feel like Very Important Penpals (VIP's). It was an AWESOME morning.
- Another successful Saturday Academy. Thanks to the teachers running the Saturday Academy students are getting the additional support they need. We also had a very successful parent meeting resulting in parents wanting more tools for home to help their children. Great job Saturday Academy crew!

Grade 3 Professional Development
Last week I shared the following write-up with staff about the grade 3 professional development. They are nearing their final week however, they have agreed to continue the work. You are more than welcome to hang back and be a part of this work.
The third-grade team has been engaging in after-school professional development around the best practices in literacy instruction. The work is centered around the Essential Instructional Practices in Literacy (see links below for further information). The team also received new curricular resources to enhance reading instruction. This resource, Units of Study for Teaching Reading by Lucy Calkins and colleagues, follows the workshop framework in which we teach. The teachers are implementing the new units, tracking student progress and working together to refine instructional practices in the classroom.
Early Release Agenda- sent to you on Friday
Awesome Opportunity to Collaborate! Scotch staff will be coming to Sheiko for our March 15th Early Release!
In an effort to help prepare Scotch for the new changes in their building, specifically how they will use the new furniture to optimize instruction and classroom routines, we will use our March 15th Early Release to give them tips and ideas to consider.
There will also be time for Scotch and Sheiko to meet in grade level PLCs.
Below is a tentative agenda for March 15th. In order to best help Scotch prepare for their new furniture, I will need your help. Please complete this survey by Monday, March 11th if you are willing to highlight your room and how you’ve used the furniture to enhance instruction, student choice & voice, etc. The purpose of this is to highlight the advantages of the furniture and to show how you’ve made it work. We are focusing on the positives and the advantages---not the problems.
Link to Sheiko Tour Volunteers:
The overall framework for the Scotch tour will be simple. Scotch staff will be broken up into groups, accompanied by 1-2 Sheiko staff members. There will specific stops/classrooms for each group to make, where they will learn more about how the furniture works for specific purposes. Once each group visits each classroom, we will return as a group to share big takeaways.
