2016-17 School Calendar Release
Community Affairs
To Onslow County School Employees
During the March meeting, the Board of Education approved the school calendar for the 2016-17 school year which was created in collaboration with parents, community members, and OCS staff.
Putting together a calendar is never as easy as it sounds. When drafting a calendar, the committee follows NC legislation which posed several challenges for the 2016-17 school year. State legislation requires that student days begin no earlier than the Monday closest to August 26, and finish no later than the Friday closest to June 11. This explains why school is beginning on August 29, 2016 – later than in previous years, and will end on June 9, 2017.
You may also notice that our teachers have most of their workdays before students begin and after students finish. Teachers prefer workdays spread throughout the year so they can attend professional development, learn, and apply the new skills to their teaching, then repeat the cycle. However, with only 205 weekdays between August 29, 2016 and June 9, 2017, the calendar committee had to fit 180 student days, 11 federally-required holidays, and 10 state-required annual leave days (winter and spring break) into the calendar. This left only four days for teacher workdays to be scheduled between the first and last student days.
The complexity of the calendar is difficult to explain. We are always willing to answer any questions you might have or note your suggestions for future calendars. The calendars are available on the district website http://onslowcounty.schoolinsites.com/
Thank you for all that you do for our students. We appreciate you.
