Workshop Meeting
Preliminary Design Work for New Elementary School
Mike Kelly, Principal Architect at KCBA, reviewed progress on the new elementary school. Last week, principals and elementary school teachers from all buildings were invited to design feedback meetings for the architects to gain insight into how maker spaces and literacy spaces are being used across the district along with STEM, technology, TV Studio space, and the arts. They reported that the staff was glad to be asked to give input and shared many ideas for the new building plan. It was also reported that sewer, water, gas, electrical plans and a traffic study have begun. Bi-weekly design meetings are underway and two public feedback meetings are scheduled for May 24 at Jaindl School and May 25 at Fogelsville School (both at 7 PM).
A KCBA architect team showcased some new ideas for the exterior of the building. The focal point of the school is the main entrance/STEM/Creative Commons area which can be seen from the front of the building and the interior courtyard at the rear. The goal is to hIghlight literacy right at the front door as an open concept spills into a creative STEM area and literacy/media center.
