Alder Weekly Update

Message from the Principal
Hello Parents, Staff, and Students,
The Wizard of Oz production is really moving along. With supply costs being so high currently, we are hoping to defray costs wherever possible. If you have any of the following painting supplies around your house (drop cloths, roller pads, or paint brushes) , and you would be willing to donate, we would greatly appreciate it. Please drop off in the front office with your name on it.
The Academic Career Fair will be at the high school on January 27th. Your child should have brought home a permission slip. This needs to be signed and returned, allowing your child to go to the high school and participate in the fair. Please get these signed and returned as soon as possible.
Our Spelling Bee Champion is 7th grader, Alex Piskun. He and many other students did a fine job spelling some difficult words. Second place went to Destiny Abreau This is always a fun and suspenseful event! Congratulations to Alex, Destiny, and all of our top Spellers.
Right now, Parents’ Club and Renaissance are planning for the February 3rd Dance. They are pre- selling tickets and you cannot buy tickets at the door. I had the wrong date for the dance last week as it was changed. It is February 3rd.
Our students showed up to school today wearing their favorite sports and team gear. There was a lot of green out there and some other teams represented too.
Please enjoy the pictures, check out ehtalder Instagram, and have a great weekend!
Alder Spelling Bee
The 2023 Alder Avenue Middle School Spelling Bee was held Thursday 01/19 in the LGI. After nine rounds and nearly two hundred words, a champion was determined. Seventh grader Alex Piskun won for the second year in a row. He is the first back-to-back champion in recent memory. Second place went to 8th grader Destiny Abreau. Third place was a tie between 8th grader Cheyenne Bilge and 6th grader Maha Protiva. Some of the words that were spelled correctly included: Sanskrit, telenovelas, Zimbabwe, architrave, Gaels, hurdy-gurdy, and Vesuvian. The championship word was Sikhism. Afterwards, the students and family members in attendance enjoyed some snacks, talked about the event and had some fun.
Congratulations to all of our competitors yesterday on an impressive display of spelling. Everyone brought their “A-game!”
Alder Avenue submitted two videos to the Healthy Schools, Healthy Children Winter PSA contest and we won! Both videos were great and all of the students involved did an awesome job! Above is a picture of the group receiving their prize. You can find our videos linked below:

What is your position at Alder? What brought you here? How long have you been here?
I have been a self-contained teacher here at Alder for 5 years! I completed my student teaching both at the high school and Fernwood. I then applied for the open MD teacher position in the district and was placed at Alder.
What is or has been one of your favorite things about Alder?
I absolutely love the team I work with! I’m so fortunate to work with amazing paraprofessionals who have created such a positive work environment. I’ve also been fortunate enough to work with colleagues who are willing to sit down and collaborate whenever necessary. We’re constantly working to build greater opportunities for our students to become involved with their peers and give back to the community!
What do you think will be your greatest challenge this year?
My greatest challenge has been completing me Master’s Degree while teaching. I’ve been working hard to balance work, school and family. Graduating this May will feel great!
Where did you go to school? What degree did you earn?
I graduated from Rowan University with my BA in English Education and a Teacher of Students with Disabilities Endorsement. This May, I’ll graduate from Rowan University with my Master’s in Special Education.
Any fun facts you would like to share about yourself?
I’ll be getting married this August!
We are Ally Strong!
