Greetings
TeamL
I hope you had a great break and had time to connect with your family and friends. It's hard to believe that we have completed a quarter of school. Thank you for your dedication to the students. I appreciate the energy you put into the PD on October 2nd. There are some important items happening at school this week:
1. In conjunction with the Department of Traffic Engineering, we are going to explore some options to increase traffic flow. For the last week and the week before we went on break, I have been advertising that the loop will be closed. We put out an additional sign as well during that time. The goal is to have parents drop off and continue in the same direction. We will also have all of our campus supervisors assisting. Please cooperate with directions and anticipate some wait time as we adjust. There will be signs as well that designate drop-off zones. All staff members please park in the staff parking lot or the areas in front of the bus drop and 300 wing off Duncan Ranch Road.
2. We have an important fundraiser and spirit event coming up called Walk for Change. Our goal is to collect loose change and donate this change to a charity, a school improvement idea and for professional development opportunities for our staff. Please assist by advertising and passing out the envelopes in your TSP. All items have been placed in your boxes. We need to pump it up!
3. I have contacted district officials and we are working on bringing more shaded structures to our school site as well as more cafeteria workers/carts.
4. I have contacted the Safe School Ambassador program and we will start training for the new year. The group will help with anti-bullying ideas.
5. ELM is entering into a contract with Eduabroad to create a sister school with groups in China, Japan and possibly, other countries. We will have students shadowing other students in your classroom. I am meeting with prospective sister school principals this week.
6. Dress Code Amendment. After much discussion with students and staff, we have modified the dress code for tank tops/sleeveless shirts. Students can wear these items if the top straps are at least 2 to 3 inches in thickness and the sides/back do not expose undergarments.
7. There is ongoing discussion of the extended nutrition break. I will keep you informed as we discuss the items with union representatives.

A Note From a Parent
As I receive these notes, I will share them with the staff.
Dear Dr.Cooke,
Sometimes we forget the impact that teachers and staff have at Schools. Schools are busy places, and teachers are busy people, so it’s not surprising that sometimes we miss out on chances to stop and reflect upon the influence that they wield over the students at Eastlake Middle. This year I have been more involved and have spent more time than last year in campus .
I want to take a minute to let you know about this staff members that they have been more than helpful , not only with me but with others. Lorena Loera , she is amazing and so professional . Diana Hurst , always with a warm greeting and so dedicated.
Don, Robert , Mike and Rangel ," what a team “ Simply the best! Always so helpful and with a HUGE smile any time of the day. I can keep naming many many more of them. Is such a wonderful campus and you are doing a WONDERFUL job. I have heard many good things from other parents about you.
I also want to take a moment to share with you about one of Thomas' teachers that has impacted him in many positive ways. He said, “Mom” I have the most amazing teacher, she is so so so nice and her class is so much fun. I couldn’t wait to meet her and was looking forward for the open house. I guess he was right. She is the kind of teacher that has such a joy and passion for teaching that is contagious to the students and makes them exited about her class.
So, thank you to all the great teachers that you have at ELM. To show how powerful they are, as individuals and as a teachers.
